Help for Dummies

  • Unknown's avatar

I am trying to set up a blog, and I am completely lost, I wish there would be instructions for dummies, like myself.
Due to traumas incurred between the year 2000 and 2015, those years have been erased from my memory, and all digital development is a mystery to me.

My chosen theme has a photo, which I wish to remove, but cannot? can anyone explain to a five year old how to do this?

    Thank you.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

It ought to be fun creating a blog, but I only experience trauma and frustration!

Hi, sorry for the delay. I just want to confirm something since your site doesn’t have too much content yet, are you referring to this image on your blog? Would you like to replace it or delete it? http://prntscr.com/kk30o6

    Hi Torres126,

Thank you so much for responding. Yes, that is the image which is already there, when you choose your theme, and which I do not know how to remove.

I am very very sorry, I wish I had someone around me I could ask, but alas I do not.

However, I think I shall give it a miss, I am too old, maybe one day I can find the money to pay for assistance in creating a blog. As even just reading the instructions is like trying to read Chinese, I start shaking, get nausea, become perplexed and depressed. I simply do not understand all the terms and what the differences are between e.g. ‘Social Menu’ and ‘Header’, the header must be something at the top, but what is a ‘social Menu’? What is it? Where does it go? What do you put in it?

I did create a blog some years ago, but everything was much more simple and straightforward back then, today you need a degree in computer science it seems.

I do really appreciate you responding. But even if you tell me how to remove the picture, it won’t stop there, because I need support every step of the way, and this I cannot expect anyone to give me. I am not worth it, but I wish WP would provide a very simple alternative for Dummies.

    Thanks again.

What I mean is, it is not worth it trying to help me, I will never understand the mechanisms anyway.

    Hi there,

The best thing about helping out on the forums is when you do understand it, and I’m going to try my best to help. Please don’t ever hesitate to ask, blogging can seem demanding and frustrating at times, but it can be a lot of fun when you’re on the right track. Never apologise!

Yes, that is the image which is already there, when you choose your theme, and which I do not know how to remove.

Let’s start with the image first and how to remove it. That image seems to be the Featured Image for the default post. You could just delete the post by going to https://wordpress.com/posts/lilianemurray.wordpress.com/, click the three dots and then clicking “Trash”.

Alternatively, this is how to remove the image:

    1. Go to http://lilianemurray.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_status=publish&post_type=post
    2. Click “edit” under “The Journey Begins”
    3. Scroll to the bottom until you get to the “Featured Image” box on the right
    4. Remove the Featured Image
    5. Save

You can also delete media by:

    1. Going to http://lilianemurray.wordpress.com/wp-admin/upload.php
    2. Click the image
    3. Click “Delete Permanently”

simply do not understand all the terms and what the differences are between e.g. ‘Social Menu’ and ‘Header’, the header must be something at the top, but what is a ‘social Menu’?

So a header is your own image which appears at the top, it’s like a cover for your website, and one of the first thing a new users will see. You can set it by:

    1. Going to http://lilianemurray.wordpress.com/wp-admin/customize.php
    2. Clicking “Header Image”
    3. Clicking “Add New Image”
    4. Uploading an image from your device
    5. Saving

A social links menu is what you can use to display icons to social media, such as Twitter or YouTube. You can learn to set it up here and come back to me if you have any questions: https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/social-links-menu/

I am not worth it, but I wish WP would provide a very simple alternative for Dummies.

The support documentation does provide step-by-step guides for most things: https://en.support.wordpress.com

But if you’re ever in any doubt, or confused on how to do something, please don’t ever hesitate to post in this forum. We’d be happy to help. :)

Oh, one thing I missed! Here’s some links to also help you get started with WordPress.com:

I’m certain I’m missing one though…perhaps staff could confirm what it was? It’s on my mind but I can’t think of what it is.

I know it sounds pathetic, but I am HSP, and it is simply too overwhelming, I will destroy myself. Problem is reading these guidelines, because it is like a foreign language to me, I have to keep going back and forth between the instructions and google, and then before I have understood one term I have forgotten the meaning of the previous one, please don’t waste your time om me. I shall delete my account again.

Thank you for your effort anyway, but I cannot risk my health in order to do this.

Just wish there was a blog site, which worked the way they did a few years back.

I’ve been using WordPress.com for half a decade, nothing has changed in terms of getting your blog up and running! I understand your reasons for deleting your account, best wishes. :)

    Hi lilianemurray,

I’m sorry to hear you’ve been finding creating a blog stressful. If you want to try again and need some help breaking the instructions down into smaller chunks, just let me know and I’ll be happy to work through it with you. I’ll also be here if you want to have a break and come back to it in a few days time :)
