HELP: Homepage Identical to Demo
-
I have created 3 different sites and activated the Twenty Seventeen theme each time but I cannot get it to look like the demo. I am unable to get the parallax image scrolling (the text-then-image-text-then-image layout / the background images to appear, if that makes more sense.) Can you please give me any advice on how to get my homepage to like the homepage in the demo and in your lesson.
If it helps, the only thing I have is a header and blank “Welcome to my site!” space. None of the cool parallax image scrolling, if that is what it is called. Thank you very much in advance.
PS Has anyone been able to get their site to look EXACTLY like the demo?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, What you are describing with the parallax images is because Twenty Seventeen’s special homepage template is in use. The sections on that special template are populated by your site’s other Pages.
Have a look at the theme’s showcase page under “Front Page” which describes how to set up this theme’s special homepage template: https://wordpress.com/theme/twentyseventeen/
If you have questions after reading that, please let us know.

Your site https://crocodilestilettos.wordpress.com/ – is still set to display your latest posts on the homepage. The first step to get you going is to go into your Customizer and select a page to use as your static homepage. After that, you’ll see a new Theme Options panel where you can start selecting the other pages to be displayed as your front-page panels. As Jennifer pointed out, there’s a detailed setup guide to get you going. Take a look and if you get stuck at any step, just let us know and we’ll be glad to help.

THANK YOU Justjennifer and Kathrynwp (I LOVE that you’re a Happiness Engineer :) ) !!! I appreciate your responses VERY MUCH.
The detail showing how to set up the page on https://wordpress.com/theme/twentyseventeen has the TINIEST TEXT but I blew up my page viewer to 125% and was able to follow along and achieve the parallax images. Admittedly, I initially dismissed the walk through because the text was so small but, reading IS fundamental…
If WordPress had the intuitiveness of Wix and Weebly with the coding and SEO capabilities of WordPress, “Uh, that’d be great”.
In the spirit of that, just to vent, WordPress themes should look the same way they are showcased and have all features available upon activation. Themes should not require adjustments after activating them. If anything, there should be options to delete features rather than have to add them… We all, especially newbies, are selecting themes based on the way they look.
***AND on this tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xICTJekq5A uploaded December 31st 2017, after setting up the basics, all https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xICTJekq5Afeautres were automatically available.
***AND I downloaded the theme 3 times, all 3 times what was available was slightly different. Yes, I know my theme is free and require more work. Special thanks to theme creators designing beautiful free themes for newbies!
***BUT I do appreciate your help and am very happy to be apart of the community, hopefully, I will be able to help out and answer someone else’s question soon.
Now how to I have my author name? LOL.

Hello again @crocodilestilettos, if you are referring to your site at crocodilestilettos.wordpress.com, keep in mind that the video tutorials you’ve linked to are really meant for sites using the standalone WP (org) software, which is a bit different than hosting your site here on WordPressdotcom. More about that here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
On WordPressdotcom, there’s no need to download anything, not the WP software and not your site’s theme. On WordPressdotcom you can activate the themes in our theme showcase here https://wordpress.com/themes/
Since I don’t see any change on the front page of your site at https://crocodilestilettos.wordpress.com/ can you confirm that is the site you need help with? Thanks.
Thanks also for your feedback on the readability of the Twenty Seventeen showcase page. I do have to agree with you, but I’ve so gotten into the habit of Ctrl++ on web pages or Ctrl+scroll to zoom that it’s second nature now. Unfortunately you can’t do that on screen shots, so there I open them in a new browser tab and then click on them to display them at full size. Once you’ve done this in your browser, it “remembers” your preference until you delete your browser cookies and cache. Ultimately it would be nice if it wasn’t necessary.

Thanks Justjennifer! Being a newbie, I did not know there was difference (or a need to know the difference) between .com and .org- I have been using WordPress.com as my home base. And, I don’t mind zooming in, as long as the information is there.
I also have learned from research WordPress fuels a large part of the web, around 27% ? Once themes look EXACTLY they way they do in the demo upon activation (like a Wix and Weebly), that number will only get larger.
I have been tempted (but advised against via YouTube) to go back to Wix or Weebly because the learning curve on WordPress is other-worldly – there is nothing to extrapolate from when learning WordPress. I can imagine the bounce back rate from WP to Wix and Weebly are high.
Otherwise I love the idea of a responsive forum, and I love how beautiful Twenty Seventeen has the potential to be.
Oh, and the link is obsessionmagazine.wordpress.com. (I had 3 sites when I posted this question and the question applied to all 3).
Thanks again, Happy Sunday!

Hello again, Thanks for confirming your website URL.
It helps to understand the differences between WordPress ORG and COM just to know what are the strengths of each flavor when choosing a platform.
Since you’ve also mentioned that you are new to the platform, you might find these links helpful and hopefully you’ve gotten at least some of them via email:
