Help I am widget-less!
-
Of course I picked the “pink” theme which has two columns. I wanted to add widgets and when I did, it mentioned that I was seeing this message because I picked a theme that was without widgets…BUT… that if I wanted to correct that to click on “a link”. When I did that
the only thing that came up was Invalid Key.
Any suggestions? -
Sadly, I don’t know why they do not remove that link as it is only applicable to the self-hosted software from wordpress.org, not to the themes at wordpress.com. Since we do not have access to the underlying theme files, we cannot muck with or modify them to put in widget support.

I think you belong over at .org? It seems you link to a commercial blog? http://wordpress.org/support/

Well, the sidebar is too narrow to use the standard widgets on WordPress.com. The theme would need to have widget designed especially for that template. Or the creator should alter his/her work. Wouldn’t that be so?
-
I would just contact support. They are really good about answering questions and trust me I’ve had many! Good luck

We have 2½ million bloggers here. We can’t all have individually custom made themes just by asking. Besides I doubt WordPress can change the theme layout without a permission from the designer. There is an copyright issue involved here.

They don’t generally tinker with the themes presented very substantially. I’m not aware of a single one that wasn’t widget-enabled that they’ve subsequently enabled for widgets. Best to just change to a different theme that allows widgets.
-
Interesting that they won’t add widget support. Especially since they added avatar support to The Journalist.
-
Yes, but they OWN gravatar, and for obscure, SEO-y reasons they want to make sure everyone has a good reason to get avatarded.
-
I’m not saying they won’t do it eventually, but they’re much more likely to just add similar themes that are widget-enabled. From what I understand it’s not exactly trivial to make this change on an existing theme. Even if they are going to make those changes, I wouldn’t expect to see it before the end of the year unless they hire a bunch more people than they’re already announcing.

WordPress is very concerned about honoring the work of theme authors and such and in keeping the themes they are using here at .com as close as possible to the original.
-
But, don’t they only use GPL-licensed blogs and thus are allowed to do basically whatever they want with them?
-
They could, but they choose (or have chosen till now) not to. They are avid supporters of open source and as such seem to have a pretty healthy respect for other open source (GPL) authors and such. Part of the last round of theme changes ended up bringing some themes here that has been modified or changed back in line with the original design (the original flowers on the rules on the Neat theme sidebar reappeared and caused quite a bit of whining).
