Help! I Can’t Launch My Free WordPress Site!!

  • Unknown's avatar

I created a website using the free hosting & subdomain on WordPress and “published” the pages, but the web address still said “Coming Soon”… So then I tried the “Launch Site” buttons, but they all direct me to purchase a domain or upgrade before allowing the launch… How can I make my “free” website visible to the public without any purchases? Please help!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi @nshuq60gmailcom,

I took a look at your site and noticed that you created it using the Big Sky AI builder. This feature is available for a free trial, but it requires a Premium plan or higher to launch the site.
Check this guide for reference: https://wordpress.com/support/ai-website-builder/

Here you can see the plans we have available and find one that suits your needs: Choose a WordPress.com plan

Once you upgrade to a Premium plan or higher, you will be able to launch your site.

Let me know if that helps.

I initially tried the AI builder, but thought I’d replaced it with a template. Is there a way to start over building the site (without AI) for free?

Hi there nshuq60, in the first support guide that staff linked to, it says this:

If you change your site’s theme, the AI Website Builder functionality will be disabled (but you will not lose the site you created!)

Have you changed your site’s theme to something else?

  • Hi @nshuq60gmailcom, I see that you’ve used the AI site builder, changed your theme, and continued working on pages.

However, as the AI site builder was initially used, you would still need to upgrade the site if you want to launch it.

If you need to start over, feel free to start over a new site from here: https://wordpress.com/sites by clicking “Add New Site”.

@sreeghs, just to clarify, so what you’re saying is that if the AI site builder is used initially to create a new WordPress.com website, it is not possible to launch that site without upgrading even after the site owner changes the theme?

What happens if, after disabling the AI builder, the site owner exports the content of their AI built site and then imports it to a new, free WordPress.com website? Will they be able to launch that new free website without needing to upgrade to Premium?

Thank you for taking the time to explain.

  • Hey @nshuq60gmailcom,

Just a quick note – I’ve sent you an email with an update about your theme change and site launch. Feel free to check your inbox, and let me know there if you have any questions!

  • Hello @justjennifer, thanks for your questions:

just to clarify, so what you’re saying is that if the AI site builder is used initially to create a new WordPress.com website, it is not possible to launch that site without upgrading even after the site owner changes the theme?

That is correct as of now; I’ve also reached out to the team to check in on this further and explore any other possible paths.

What happens if, after disabling the AI builder, the site owner exports the content of their AI built site and then imports it to a new, free WordPress.com website? Will they be able to launch that new free website without needing to upgrade to Premium?

There isn’t currently a way to disable the AI builder manually. When a site is created using the AI site builder, it enters a free trial experience. Once that trial ends, or when the site is ready to launch, the site owner would need to upgrade to proceed.

That said, if the site owner chooses to upgrade and, once upgraded, wants to export their content, they absolutely can. There are no restrictions on exporting and importing that content into a new site.

    @sreehgs 🙏 much appreciated.

If I have time later on, I’ll tinker with this a bit and open a new thread if needed.
