Help! I'm being sued for posting someone's poem
-
Hello. I received an email from the author of a poem that I posted on my blog. I did give her credit in the post, but they are still stating that it was copyright infringement since I didn’t have her permission to post it. Now they want me to pay them $7,500. I make no money off my small blog and certainly didn’t make anything off of the use of her poem. I just thought it was inspirational and wanted others to read it too. I have since removed it at their request.
Can you please help? Can she really sue me over this?

It sounds to me as though she is trying it on myself. How can she demand a specific amount like that. If you gave her full credit and now you have removed it at her request that should be enough.
I would ignore any further attempts from the other person to get money from you.
Good luck. -
There is a law firm in the US that googles copyrighted materials and then contacts the original author and talks them into suing. It’s like ambulance chasing.
Removing the material will probably be sufficient, and a judge and/or jury will almost certainly agree. They are hoping you’ll just pay up before it goes to court so they go away. If they DO sue you, they have to pay to file. I expect they won’t do that, but they might. Not a lot of poets have money to sue people.
PS NEVER do this again. Do not post copyrighted material, whether you give credit for it or not. You can excerpt perhaps a stanza or two, and link to the source saying “read the rest here”.
