Help Importing Backup sql.gz file

  • Unknown's avatar

I am moving an old WordPress.org blog to my WordPress.com site. My backup is from a previous version of WordPress, ending in sql.gz.

The original website (goodstewardess.com) no longer exists, so I no longer have access to WordPress.org and can’t convert the file there.

This previous thread from another user addresses the exact problem that I am having and it was resolved. I’m hoping someone can do the same thing for me:

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi there!

I’m going to tag this topic so someone from staff looks at it.

    Hi Deb,

A file ending in .sql.gz is a compressed version of your MySQL database file. It includes all your database tables as well as your data. As mentioned in the other thread you will not be able to import the .sql.gz to WordPress.com for security reasons. Only xml files are supported for WordPress imports.

If you could provide us with the sql.gz file we can try and provide you with a .xml file. However, as noted in the previous thread your media will not be imported.

If you have a backup of your previous WordPress.org site the best option is for you to import the files yourself (including media) into another self-hosted site available publicly online. Your current host may be able to help with this. Once your content is uploaded you could then export it from the WordPress Admin.

If you would like us to try the import let us know and we can sent you a message where you can reply with a link to your backup file on a file sharing service.
