Help! Lost my Custom Design!

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, we’ve had a nice little WordPress site for our farm for about 3 years. No problems.

Got notified a few months back that Custom Design and No Ads were going to expire, so I updated the credit card and all seemed fine. Today I noticed that the site has lost its Custom Design (a long style sheet that I had made)—and the Custom Design is no longer in My Upgrades, so there is no option to RENEW. If there was a billing problem, does that mean the style sheet is lost FOREVER? We put a ton of work into it.

    Can someone please tell me:

    (1) Is the style sheet gone for good?
    (2) If I go to the Store and buy Custom Design, will that restore the style sheet I made or be blank?

    HELP!

    Thanks.

    Hello there,
I’m so sorry to read about this happening to your site. I’ve tagged this thread for Staff intervention. Please subscribe to it so your are notified when they reply and as they do have a backlog please be patient while waiting.

P.S. Note this as it will allay your fear re: loss.

What happens if I unsubscribe from my Custom Design upgrade?
All upgrades on WordPress.com are renewed yearly. Should you choose to cancel your subscription, your custom fonts, colors, and CSS will no longer be applied to your blog. The revisions for your customizations will still be saved, but they won’t be visible on the blog’s front end unless you renew your subscription. http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/#frequently-asked-questions

Many thanks, Timethief, very kind of you to reply.

I did see that blurb on the Custom Design page. I just wasn’t totally confident that if I go into the Store and buy the upgrade again, that it wouldn’t hose my old style sheet and start with a blank one. The catch was the word “renew”—currently there is no “renew” button in the Store or My Upgrades. Thus I was seeking a little staff intervention to tell me I can safely buy the upgrade anew and thereby restore my old style sheet, or perhaps that staff could flip some switches on the backend to make that happen. All my credit card info is in fact up to date and has been charged for other upgrades.

For what it’s worth I did download (copy and paste) a backup of my style sheet after initial development a few years back. But there have been changes to the live file since then. The WordPress Export tool only covers content, not styles. So I actually made a manual backup of the style sheet, though I have not continued doing that on a regular basis. I guess very few users do.

    Fingers crossed. Thanks.

Well, staff are “experimenting” with the forums for the next two days, which basically means we won’t be able to reach them. If you have a backup made of the style sheet, then just buy the upgrade again instead of renewing.

Thanks, I will do that as a last resort, but I’d really like an assurance because I hacked my way through several rounds of CSS updates without backing it up—and I heavily commented the file after that initial backup because commenting only became permitted in subsequent versions of the CSS editor.

Hopefully a staff member or someone who has gone through this same process will drop a note in here. I can wait a couple days because farm season isn’t here yet in Upstate New York ;-)

Timethief and Raincoaster, I calmed down and took the plunge and bought the upgrade again. As you predicted, the style sheet had been saved and was applied as soon as the purchase went through.

I suppose WordPress staff would say that the blurb on the Custom Design page spelled this out clearly; but, I thought caution was warranted since the stakes for me were kind of high.

At any rate, thanks for your fast responses. Now I can work on giving the site a Spring facelift before farming season kicks in.
