Help me escape Jigsy

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello. I am trying to escape an old website builder/host I’ve had for years that I’ve pretty much discovered is terrible for SEO. I’ve read through the forums here at wordpress and there doesnt seem to be any way for me to directly transfer anything from them…they’re basically holding my content hostage and have absolutely no way for me to transfer it. I spoke to someone at squarespace yesterday (because I can’t get ahold of anyone at wordpress) and the guy I talked to said I am going to have to retype all 80+ pages of my site. I asked if I could just copy and paste the text and he said no because I could end up copying some of the code and formatting….Does anybody know if this is right? Is there any better way? Is word press different in this regard? Please tell me there is a better way :-(

    Hi joetherapy,

I am trying to escape an old website builder/host I’ve had for years

I notice you mentioned both Jigsy and Squarespace. If you share the URL of your current site with me, I’ll see what your options are for moving to WordPress.com.

    Thanks!

Hi Gemma, thanks for your help ^_^ my current site is at http://www.joeborders.com
It’s hosted through jigsy. I just mentioned squarespace because I talked with them first about all of this because They have live chat with support I was able to connect with.

    Hi joetherapy,

my current site is at http://www.joeborders.com. It’s hosted through jigsy.

Thanks! While the content can be imported, it won’t be possible to transfer your current theme. There are two options for importing your content:

    1. Request an .xml export file from Jigsy.

If Jigsy can’t provide an .xml file, you will need to use a service that supports importing from an RSS feed and then create an .xml file from there.

    2. Import the content manually.

This would be the slower option because it’s a manual process. But without an .xml file it is the only way.

We don’t currently accept incoming domains transfers so your domain will need to remain with PublicDomainRegistry. It can be connected to your WordPress.com site using the domain mapping upgrade included in paid plans (Personal, Premium or Business):

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

Let me know how you get on.

….Yeah, they said they can’t give me an xml file. What do you think about what the guy at squarespace said? He said that copy and pasting all my content into a new system would bring code and formatting along with it and that I would need to retype everything by hand…..this isn’t really true right? I’m planning on just copy and pasting and rearranging as needed.

    Hi joetherapy,

….Yeah, they said they can’t give me an xml file.

That’s a shame! I looked into the possibility of importing from an RSS feed but wasn’t able to find one. It appears Jigsy doesn’t enable them by default.

He said that copy and pasting all my content into a new system would bring code and formatting along with it and that I would need to retype everything by hand…..this isn’t really true right?

Copying and pasting would bring some formatting with it but there is no need to re-type everything by hand. Our editor includes a ‘Paste as Text’ button which removes any special formatting and HTML tags:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#pasting-text

You should be able to copy and paste most of the content from your existing site — although images will need to be uploaded and added back manually.

Your site can be marked as private while you work on it so no-one has to see anything that is work in progress:

Thank you Gemma! I’ve discovered that I do have access to an RSS file for all of my blog posts. I looked around the wordpress forums to find out how to do this and the few I read are saying you can’t do this because wordpress bans it as potential “blogspamming”…or something like that….How do I do this?

I just upgraded to a business account. I tried to install several applications to import an rad feed but they say I need a custom domain first. I don’t want to reassign the domain I have yet because I want to set up everything first….thats how this works right? Set everything up, then redirect domain so that you don’t have a bunch of down time?

  • Hi @therapyjoe, now that you have the business account, you can get in touch here:
    http://wordpress.com/help/contact

Also you can set up most things on the account without a custom domain, but we do need to put the custom domain in place (and give time for its SSL to work) before you will be able to install plugins. I hope that helps.
