Help: Menus suddenly disappeared

  • Unknown's avatar

I have the Academica theme for my class website. I haven’t made any changes to the menu – but this morning, the top-level menu just disappeared. Makes it very difficult for students to find any of the more than 100 pages I have made!
I tried restoring the top level menu… but now only the main categories appear – and NONE of the 100+ sub-pages appear in as drop-down choices, like they used to.
This was working fine last night. No idea what happened.
(I also noticed that the entire editor for WordPress.com has changed)
My students really need this, so can anyone offer suggestions?
How do I restore a functioning menu bar to the top?
(When they click on a topic, like Physics, or Chemistry, they should be able to see the primary pages underneath it.)

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Same here! I’m also using Academica and the disappeared menu is a real problem!

Strangely enough, I can see your menu, kaiserscience, but I cannot see my own, regardless of whether I’m logged in or logged out.

On a separate help discussion, I read some seemingly helpful, but vague advice. They said:

“Go to Appearance->Menu from your Admin area. Make a new menu, and assign whatever you want to it. Parent items will be at the top, sub items will be in the drop-down. … To make child of a parent menu, put the child page under the parent , and drag slightly to right…”

Well, I found the appearance menu under Admin, and it let me set up ONLY the top level menus. I don’t see anyplace to drag and drop anything?

Same thing happened to me yesterday. Academica. I thought I knew what I did to lose the Main Menu. It involved trying to remove a stray bit of HTML that was on the screen right above the menu bar. I think it may have controlled visibility. I couldn’t delete it. But later yesterday, the menu was gone. I was able to restore a sidebar menu with all the pages nested properly (though the top parents defaulted to alphabetical order), using widgets, but it’s ugly and inconvenient to use, and it’s only on the home page.

    Hi folks – somewhat similarly;

I complained that ‘Home’ page is missing from my menu bar 4 hrs ago on page 20 of ‘sticky’ Editor Feedback thread https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/editor-feedback?replies=589

Didn’t mention that on Sunday I noticed all pages and sub-pages of my menu on display above home page. It was ok Monday morning but today there’s no ‘Home’.

  • Thanks for the reports about Academica, we are investigating and will keep you posted here.

Some painful progress.. about the advice I read “…”Go to Appearance->Menu from your Admin area. Make a new menu, and assign whatever you want to it. Parent items will be at the top, sub items will be in the drop-down. … “

I finally figured out how to slowly add back my pages, and sub-pages, to the menu, one at a time. The problem with the quoted advice was that it was vague, didn’t include specific step-by-step directions. Too me a bit, but I figured it out.

Still, this has left me frustrated, overworked and unhappy: It will take me hours to rebuild all the drop-down menus on my website. I want to use a web provider where this kind of thing won’t happen.

Is there an option to backup my page precisely as it is, and then restore it to that state? (Paid, or free, doesn’t matter, I will subscribe if I get meaningful service and a decent, easy-to-use ability to backup my work.)

  • kaiserscience – I’m very sorry for the inconvenience.

We are working to restore everyone’s default menu in Academica and will keep you posted here as soon as we have news on a fix. The menu is still there, it’s just being hidden inadvertently at the moment and we’re working to get it displayed again as soon as we can.

  • We’ve just made a temporary fix to get people’s default menus in Academica displaying again until we can sort out the underlying issue. Thank you for your patience.

The fix works, thank you very much for your fast response!

Sorry, I don’t understand the fix. I’ve reloaded my pages and there’s still no top menu bar. The side menu I created as a patch is still there, but only on the Home page. Maybe in creating this temporary menu, I displaced the main one.

Anyway, where can I find the fix?

  • jonathanlayharris – to see your default menu again you’ll need to unassign the new custom menu you created from the theme. Head to the Menu management area to unassign it.

Thank you. Got the top bar back now. Much better! Did I say Thank You?

Now I just have to figure out how to wipe out the temporary custom menu at the bottom of the home page. Afraid just to say “delete menu,” because I named it “Main Menu” and I’m afraid I may wipe out the real main menu. But this is a relatively minor annoyance.

  • jonathanlayharris – you should be able to unassign that menu as well from the footer location without needing to delete it.

Hi @alimkocak, I see your menus on the site you reference so I assume you have gotten this taken care of.
