Help! Migrating from wordpress.com to wordpress.org

  • Unknown's avatar

I can’t figure out what to do and I’ve been working on this for HOURS! I have my own domain at wordpress.com and I am trying to change over to wordpress.org. I’m set up on Bluehost…and I’ve imported the blog file from wordpress.com, but nothing makes sense after that!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

So the problem is not with the export, it’s with the domain?

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/move-domain/

  • Unknown's avatar

yes. As of right now they have my site as
    http://69.195.124.78/~mothersn/mothersnichecom/
instead of just mothersniche.com. And I’m also confused why my followers didn’t come with the switchover. I thought if I already had my own domain at wordpress.com, that my followers would come with me to wordpress.org.

And I’m also confused why my followers didn’t come with the switchover.

Once you are set up and have your URL is place Staff can can move your email subscribers only. Followers using the WordPress.com Reader cannot be transferred because there is no WordPress.org Reader or in fact a community with shared in-house features like there is here at WordPress.com.

    What’s required is:
    installation and activation of the JetPack plugin on your WordPress.org isntall;
    posting both URLs for the underlying .wordpress.com blog and the domain into this forum thread;
    tagging the thread with modlook in the sidebar;
subscribing to the thread so you are notified when Staff make the transfer.

My domain has switched over now…but I’m still confused as to why I can still log into wordpress.com and wordpress.org. Shouldn’t I only have an account with one or the other now? and my stats at wordpress.com say 500 views today and my stats at wordpress.org say 13 view….but’s it’s all the same domain…why different stats? And why do I still have an account on both sites?

  • Unknown's avatar

Jetpack is running, and I tried contacting wordpress about transferring my email followers over and no response! I had my own domain at wordpress.com and kept the same domain when switching to wordpress.org. Can someone help me get my subscribers transferred over? It’s messing with my traffic. My domain is mothersniche.com

  • Unknown's avatar

From what WordPress.com blog to which self-hosted site do you want the e-mail subscribers to be moved to?

Your stats are differently because you have two Jetpack sites connected: 69.195.124.78/~mothersn/ and http://www.themomnetwork.com

I assume http://www.themomnetwork.com is your primary site.

  • Unknown's avatar

No, my primary site is mothersniche.com I bought the domain when I signed up with wordpress.com and kept the same domain when I switched to self-hosted (they did give me a temporary domain until I switched my name servers, but it is back to being mothersniche.com)

http://www.themomnetwork.com is my addon site and does not have any followers yet as I am still building the site

  • Unknown's avatar

I see. So you need the followers to be moved to themomnetwork.com? From which blog(s) do you want me to move the followers from?

    Thank you.

  • Unknown's avatar

but I’m still confused as to why I can still log into wordpress.com and wordpress.org. Shouldn’t I only have an account with one or the other now?

No. They’re completely separate. You can continue to have both.

  • Unknown's avatar

No. I want my followers on mothersniche.com to stay on mothersniche.com When I switched over to self-hosted wordpress, the followers did not come with me for some reason. When I make a new post, it is not shared with my followers anymore. I need my followers from mothersniche.com at wordpress.com sent over to my self-hosted blog at mothersniche.com

  • Unknown's avatar

Also…I am having 404 errors all over my blog and bluehost told me that it is because wordpress.com still has both wordpress and bluehost listed as the nameservers. I logged into my domain manager and can only see bluehost listed. I was then told to call Wild West Domains to make sure that it is just bluehost listed and Wild West Domains told me that they can’t help me because wordpress.com owns my domain. Please, please help me with this and the “followers” issue. It is drastically messing with my traffic and has been going on ever since I switched over!

  • Unknown's avatar

All your subscribers have been moved now.

Regarding your 404 errors: Can you please try clearing out your cache?

Note that it can take up to 72 hours before DNS changes are fully propagated.

  • Unknown's avatar

    thank you.

Yes, I cleared out my cache, and I re-saved my permalinks, but still large numbers of people are getting 404 errors when trying to access my site. It’s been more than 72 hours, it’s been more than a week.

  • Unknown's avatar

Could you send us a screenshot of the page where you’re seeing the 404 errors?

I’ve just asked a developer to resolve your issue with the subscribers. I’ll keep you informed on that.

  • Unknown's avatar

The subscribers got resolved this morning, thank you.
How do I paste the screen shot into this forum?

So far I have been doing 301 redirects to the write url for each post, but it’s quite the task since they are with the links and tags in posts as well. For instance, Google has denied me twice for adsense, saying:
    Further detail:
Unable to review your site: While reviewing http://mothersniche.com/2012/09/18/shout-out-to-moms, we found that your site was down or unavailable.

  • Unknown's avatar

You can upload the screenshot to your blog’s media library and let me know about it.

As far as I can see you don’t need to add 2012/09/18 to your link because your permalinks are set up to just show the /postname/. Try http://mothersniche.com/shout-out-to-moms/ instead.

  • Unknown's avatar

Ok, I uploaded it to my media library. I know my links are set up to just show /postname/ but for some reason google and everyone is still finding a bunch of links with the date and trying to get to my blog through them.

  • Unknown's avatar

I also uploaded a screen shot of new errors that are being pulled up. Everytime I log in, I have 25 new 404 errors in the matter of hours

  • Unknown's avatar

And then every time I do a new post, it shares a funky link on facebook that has a bunch of numbers in front and takes you to a bluehost generated 404 error.
