Thanks for your help…from what I’m reading, I have to pay to move my content? That doesn’t seem to make sense…I already paid on the godaddy site for a wordpress transfer. They are asking for the wordpress FFTP user name and password….Is that published any where on WordPress? Is there any way to find it? I’d rather not spend more money to get this set up….AND, I don’t understand the lingo enough to full understand what needs to be done.

No you do not have to pay to move your content. You can make a DIY move and below is a summary of how to do that.
WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate.
http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/1. Hire a web host and purchase a domain http://wordpress.org/hosting/
2. Download a free FTP client https://filezilla-project.org/
3. Set up a WordPress.org install and equip it with a theme and plugins.
http://wordpress.org/themes/
http://wordpress.org/plugins/4. To move your content you need to create an XML export file of your content. It will not include the theme and widgets as they cannot be exported. Export your content out of your WordPress.com blog http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/ and import it into the install.
5. WordPress.com is the top level domain here and all blogs hosted by WordPress.com are on .wordpress.com sub-domains.
(a) Purchase a site redirect upgrade from wordpress.com
http://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/(b) Or if you have purchased domain mapping from WordPress.COM then see here http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/move-domain/#change-name-servers-to-point-the-domain-outside-of-wordpress-com and here http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/move-domain/
6. Transfer subscribers. See http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/moving-your-subscribers/
7. Set your wordpress.com blog visibility to private. To change blog visibility to private go to > Settings > Reading scroll to Blog Visibility and choose option 3 . See the guide here http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/
WordPress.com and WordPress.org have different log-ins and run different versions of themes with same names. If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there and receive advice from WordPress.ORG bloggers.
Alternatively you can purchase a Guided Transfer and Staff will do the move and set up for you http://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/

Hi Chatsalot – phantomcoast posted some good links for you. Trial and error is your best guide here.
If after reading those articles, you’re still not sure what you’re doing yet, I recommend you do one of the following :
1. read more documentation and learn how to do the migration
2. hire someone to do it for you
3. pay WordPress.com to migrate your site for youYour site is hosted on WordPress.com, which is a free service. From what you’ve written, it sounds like you paid GoDaddy for hosting. They will not move your site from one host (which is part of what WordPress.com is) to another. That’s what this is for : http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org
If you’re not sure about the difference between WordPress.com and GoDaddy (basically, WordPress.org for your purposes), check this article out : http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
Hope that helps!

Thanks for the help…I appreciate it….I’m in way over my head, for sure! I’m calling in tech friend. So much for this being an “easy” thing. I was told, go to godaddy, purchase your site and they can help do the rest… turns out that is only true, if they have the IP address, FTP username and password…and I have NO idea what this is or how to get it…
-
PS – When I mentioned to godaddy that wordpress had a migration they said that wouldn’t work…I had to go through them to pull in data from wordpress…Not true?

@chatsalot15
Becoming a wordpress.org blogger involves a learning curve and that includes learning how to download and use an FTP client like the one I linked to above. Until you do that you cannot provide an FTP username or password. -
.I had to go through them to pull in data from wordpress…Not true?
Not true. You have a WordPress.COM blog not a WordPress.ORG install. They are assuming you have a WordPress.ORG install when you don’t and you need to tell them that and be clear on the differences yourself as well. That is why I started my comment above by stating:
WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate.
http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ and it’s why I ended with:If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there and receive advice from WordPress.ORG bloggers.
If you are an experienced WordPress.com software user, and have the skill sets required to set up and manage your own self hosted WordPress.org install then the instructions for making the move are easy to follow. But if you are not skilled at WordPress.com blogging, and also lack the skill sets required to self host your own WordPress.org install then acquiring those skills first is recommended.
As a WordPress.ORG blogger you will be responsible for all upgrades, installations, backups and troubleshooting. If you install a theme or a plugin that negatively affects your blog, then you have to figure out what went wrong and fix it.
-
If you do intend to hire someone to make the move, do the set up and coach your through the learning process then the Guided Transfer option is the way to go. http://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/
If you p[refer to hire someone else then Code Poet is a directory of WordPress professionals, web designers, and developers brought to you by Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com and the largest operator of WordPress sites. http://directory.codepoet.com/

As @timethief said, you only need FTP passwords if you’re moving from .org to .org. Your migration is a WordPress.com to WordPress.org (self hosted) migration.
Nice work, @timethief :-)
@chatsalot – you can export your data (posts and pages) from WordPress.com using the XML data export feature.
Then, make sure you have a NEW WordPress install on GoDaddy. They can help you do that on the phone, for free.
Once that is done, you can import that XML data into your new GoDaddy WordPress install.
And make sure to check out all the links we posted – they’ve got all the info you will need if you want to go the DIY route.

Nice work, @timethief :-)
Umm … thanks, I guess.
FWIW I have answered questions here for over 8 years and that’s years longer than almost every Staff member has even been on Staff. When I began there was one support Staff member and there were no support docs. lol :D So yes my answers are comprehensive and correct.
