Help! My featured image has disappeared!
-
Help! I’m using the ideation and intent theme. Several days ago, my featured image function disappeared! Now, when I try to set a featured image within ‘edit post’, the photo comes up as a flat line only about 1mm high. And when the post is uploaded, it also shows on my home page as a flat line with a grey box around it where the featured image should be.
This has only happened in the last few days. It was working fine before that. I have tried stickying earlier posts that I know were working and the featured image function on them is now not working either.

If it’s any help to you, while I was loading this post: http://papergiftsforestefany.wordpress.com/2013/10/19/big-horse-little-horse-zorse/ I noticed a new and different screen came up when I pressed the ‘set featured image’ button, than what normally comes up. It has been since this time, that the function is no longer working.

Hello!
The bug in Ideation and Intent has been resolved; can you take a look at your site and verify that things are looking better?

I have a problem with this function as well.
My featured image is not as it used to be, even though it was working alright in the same post yesterday. Now, I’ve uploaded another post and it’s all wrong too.
The first, newest post on my homepage has the featured image displaying too long and just a vertical stripe of it, zoomed in.
It is very, very troubling.
Could you please help me?

My featured image is back (thank you!) but it is not showing the whole landscape image, just part of it. It is chopping off left and right edges. The magnification seems to be too strong.
Thanks so much.

You’re 100% correct: those images are not displaying as they should be. In both cases, the images appear to be displaying at the correct width, but aren’t scaling properly. Let me take this back to the drawing board, and I’ll get back to you all as soon as I have a better answer!

Ideation and Intent is now displaying Featured Images correctly. We have also updated the documents for that Theme with recommended minimum sizing for Featured Images;
The minimum recommended width and height for the large image is: 520×345.
Thank you for your patience!

It’s still not exactly as it was, two vertical stripes are showing up on either side of my image, but much much better than before, thank you!!

Oh, I’m so glad this thread is still open. In my most recent post, I had to reduce the size of my featured image 4 times to make it fit without chopping off the bottom of the image. It started out 322 (wide) x 495 (high) and in the end had to be reduced to 235 (wide) x 361 high (10.4KB) in order to display the complete image.
I’ve never had to do this before. And I note the minimum dimensions advised above should be ok for 520×345.
Help!

Catherine, I believe that those vertical stripes are included in your original image, at least as it appears on the blog post, as here: http://d.pr/i/Av2h – the reason they only appear on the left and right hand sides is because the image is being cropped on the top and bottom.
PaperGiftsForEstefany, it does look like your image is being scaled up to fit the Featured Image space. That’s why the book cover is a bit pixellated. Could you try again with a larger image?

Hi, my featured image is not working either. It isn’t even showing up at all. This has happened to me a few times, please help! Thanks!

Ok, I’ve just tried uploading a fresh png featured image. This one is 2475 x 1613 pixels. It’s really ‘in your face’ if you know what I mean! :)
I don’t normally upload images quite this big, but just wanted to test the dimensions for you, as you did say ‘minimum’.
There is an image widget at the top right hand side of the page, to show how the image should look.
In my experience, the ideation and intent theme seems to work best with landscape images, unless you have at least 2 portrait images, or a whole heap of smaller ones.
When a post only has one portrait photo and it moves off that first (featured image) post spot, all portrait images are only showing the middle section of the photo, especially if there is only one portrait photo. If you scroll down my home page, you will see what I mean.
Thanks so much for your help.

maw28, that looks like it is a new problem, since you are using a different theme than the other bloggers in this thread. Your site is currently using the Twenty Eleven Theme, whereas the other folks here are using the Ideation and Intent Theme. Could you provide a link to the post where you’re seeing this behavior?
PaperGiftsForEstefany, in taking a look at your site, I’m not sure which parts are not displaying to your liking. The Ideation and Intent demo site looks like it also has a combination of landscape and portrait photos in the Photos sidebar. Can you tell me what doesn’t look right, currently?

The big image on this post: http://papergiftsforestefany.wordpress.com/2013/11/09/fabulous-new-e-book/ only displayed the top half of the image. I kept the post up for as long as I could. If you need me to, I can ‘sticky’ it.
My more recent posts where I have had multiple images have all been fine. Except…
In the sidebar images (recent post images) and where I only have one photo in the post, it is still only displaying a part of the image (generally the middle of the image). Like this one:
http://papergiftsforestefany.wordpress.com/2013/11/23/french-snowflakes/However, this more recent post is now only showing a thin sliver of the image in the recent post gallery sidebar:
http://papergiftsforestefany.wordpress.com/2013/12/07/caution-dont-let-any-grinches-steal-your-christmas/And my current post is only displaying some of the images on the front page as a mosaic. I have tried reloading the images, and even deleting them out of the gallery altogether and reloading them into the gallery and back into the post. It has rearranged how the images are displayed, but is still only showing some of the images – and this time, a different set. You will see that it is showing only white space where the other images should be. When the page is refreshed, it shows them very briefly, then they disappear. Also, nothing shows when I hover my mouse over the white space.
Thanks so much for your help, Saouderkirk. I love my blog and really appreciate all the hard work of the WordPress team in making them available for us all. Merry Christmas to you all!

Hello,
The way that the photo sidebar displays images is intentional: if there is only one image in the post, it will display it (automatically cropped) in landscape, to fit the size of the sidebar. If more than one image is present, it will display each image side-by-side in a portrait layout.
The only white space I can see in your sidebar is above the cartoon thumbnail and as shown here:
<img src=http://n00blar.files.wordpress.com/2013/12/screen-shot-2013-12-18-at-16-08-57.png height=300 border=2px>This instance is actually an unfortunate crop of a document that has mostly white space in the center – if you click it, you can see how that particular image resulted in a fully white thumbnail. The cropping mechanism was intended mostly for photos, so you can see why it won’t work perfectly well for images of documents.
As for the cartoon and the white space above it, I am able to replicate this on my test blog, but only with that particular image, which is mysterious. When I add a second image to the post, however, it will then put both images into portrait orientation, which displays correctly, without the added space above. I would recommend giving that a try, and see if it helps to get things looking the way you’d like.

Ok thanks Saouderkirk. Yes, this theme’s photo sidebar seems to work much better with more than one image.
I really like this theme, however working out the image issues has been a challenge. I’m also unable to insert and upload images in Windows Live Writer – they upload twice and if I simply delete the thumbnail image – as recommended elsewhere in this forum – it upsets the photo sidebar completely for this theme and fills it with lots of blank white images. I just work around that by loading images separately, then inserting them into the post.
The other post I was having trouble with (the ghost images) was actually this one which had several images.
I left it up as a sticky post for a full week. The ghost images were actually in the main feature image mosaic, which was most strange. That’s never happened before, however in my latest new post that seems to have settled down again and is now showing correctly. Maybe it was just having a bad hair day. :)
Once again, thanks so much for your help.

No problem, glad to help where I can.
Please keep me updated as things progress, I’m happy to dig into the works. After all, it’s only by finding things that aren’t quite working right that we’re able to make improvements.
Enjoy the holidays!
