Help! My website disappeared while trying to add SSL certificate.

Help! my WordPress site has disappeared. I have been trying to switch my site from HTTP to HTTPS, downloaded the Really Simple SSL plugin and purchased an SSL certificate from bluehost.

Wordpress is telling me ‘Really Simple SSL failed to detect a valid SSL certificate.’

When I log into my cPanel the status of my SSL is installed and the domain has been validated but there is an error message saying ‘HTTP DCV: The system failed to fetch the DCV (Domain Control Validation) file at “http://kristenmcveigh.com/.well-known/acme-challenge/05_0-BAW2E_CG022TW4NJVHIMHEQMSXO” because of an error: The system failed to send an HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) “GET” request to “http://kristenmcveigh.com/.well-known/acme-challenge/05_0-BAW2E_CG022TW4NJVHIMHEQMSXO” because of an error: (XID yax7bp) The response exceeded the maximum length (16 KB). ( <script type='text/jav …) at /usr/local/cpanel/Cpanel/SSL/DCV.pm line 688..'

Somewhere in trying to add my SSL certificate I have lost my entire website and need to get it back on line. My website is kristenmcveigh.com.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • Hi there!

I’m afraid that, your site is not hosted with WordPress.com. It is a site using the open-source WordPress software (from WordPress.org) but hosted with another company.

Because WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two entirely separate entities, we cannot access files or data for sites that are hosted elsewhere, so WordPress.com staff can only assist with sites that are hosted on our servers. You can read more about the differences between WordPress.org software and WordPress.com here:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

You can look for help at the community forums here: https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

http://wordpress.org/support/ is also a great resource for sites using the open-source WordPress.org software.
