Help needed: confused re: PREMIUM.

Hello,
I’ve had a standard free WordPress blog for a few years now and am relatively inexperienced/ uneducated about anything more than this. I am now hoping to upgrade my blog as I want it to be a more serious venture but I have a few (probably obvious) questions which I’d be very grateful if anyone could help me with!
What is the difference between me buying a Premium THEME and buying Premium MEMBERSHIP? If I buy just the theme can I have my own domain name etc? Or do I need premium membership to buy a premium theme at all? Alternatively, if I buy just premium membership am I still then only entitled to the free themes or are the premium themes all made available to me without further charge?
This might be a muddle so here’s the things I’m hoping to have from my blog:
– a new, more sophisticated design with extensive customization facilities
– potentially my own domain name
With this in mind, what would people suggest I go for?Thank you!

A premium theme is usually a one-time purchase of a theme. A premium plan is a set of paid features that WordPress.com charges a yearly fee for. You can see the feature list at https://store.wordpress.com/plans/

Nope. The premium plan and premium themes are separate.

There are two plans: premium and business. The premium plan entitles you to all of the free themes. The business plan allows access to 50+ premium themes as part of the business plan package, so you would not need to purchase a premium theme in that case but you would need to continue paying the annual fee to keep the theme. If you change themes periodically and you do want to use premium themes, that may be a good choice. If you are likely to stay with the same theme and don’t need other add-ons, premium would be better. If you are looking to start with something lower cost and perhaps consider ramping up in the future as your blog grows, then you could start with a free or premium theme and a domain registration or mapping.

I really like having my own domain name for my personal blog where I write, but I use the WordPress.com domain for my photo blog. Both are good, and you can start with one and upgrade to the other later if you’d like.
With this in mind, what would people suggest I go for?
This really depends on your own preference! You might consider looking through all the blogs and trying a few out. Some take a little more work to setup than others, depending on what special features various different themes have, and you can actually try each of them out in a preview on your own blog by clicking on the thumbnails at https://wordpress.com/design/
