Help needed: viewing PDFs and images in gallery

All of the Google searches in the world haven’t helped me with this, so I’m hoping someone here can. First, my blog: http://jessicapucci.com …this is where I maintain my portfolio, which is only 5% loaded due to this issue. Click on the “design” page, and you’ll see what I mean.

I have several documents that I need to post in this gallery. If they’re one-page documents, I’ve converted them to .jpgs–those have turned out fine, and indeed, everything you see on that page now is a .jpg. However, I have several multi-page documents that exist now as .pdfs …such as the “Solstice” story I was forced to divide into 3 separate .jpgs. MY GOAL: To have the one-page .jpg documents as is, and have the multi-page .pdfs display in thumbnails in the same gallery. (That way, each document would have one thumbnail, rather than multiple.)

This has to be possible, right? Maybe there’s some kind of program I can buy (hopefully there’s a free answer!), or plugin to download? Any help you’ve got would be helpful.

    Thanks in advance,
    Jessica

WordPress does not have a PDF interpreter, so they cannot create and display thumbnails of a PDF, and galleries will only do images, not files such as PDF’s or .doc’s. The only thing I could suggest would be to put the two or three pages into a single .jpg image file and then have that in the gallery.

We cannot use plugins here, so that is not a solution.

The Gallery feature is pretty much meant for photos and not documents per se. If you’re uploading photos, then Gallery is the way to go.

External plugins are not available for use on WordPress.com. Does this help? http://support.wordpress.com/uploading-documents/

You could set up a table with a jpg thumbnail in each cell linked to the downloadable pdf.

That’s all I can think of right now, too early still.

/nod to tsp and now I’m either taking an early morning nap or having more coffee.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that too. I didn’t even know it was covered in the support pages. Thanks for posting it.

It does not come up when one searches the FAQ for “Scribd”. Seriously. I was looking, because I want to post Chris Anderson’s new book into raincoastermedia; it’s on Scribd.

It comes up if you search for scribd in the support pages: http://support.wordpress.com/?s=scribd .

Thanks–but sorry, I’m still a bit confused. Two things:
    1. If I go the Scribd route, will I be able to use the Scribd links in the gallery? Or would they have to go elsewhere on the post?
    2. If I do what you suggest, TheSacredPath, and make a .jpg out of two or three pages, would I be able to create a thumbnail of just the first page for use in the gallery? Or can the thumbnail in the gallery only be a smaller version of the 3-page style? I had thought about making such a .jpg, but didn’t think that would work…I can ask around on how to make a thumbnail, but can you just tell me if its even possible?

    Thank you!

1 You can’t use Scribd in a gallery.
