Help needed with DNS settings for email with custom domain mapped

I have a WordPress blog for which I have my own domain mapped from my own provider. In the DNS settings at my provider I have set to NS1.WORDPRESS.COM.
    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM.
    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM.
    This was working.

I want to keep my email working at my provider. So I asked my provider how to set the DNS records in my WordPress account to point back to the server of my provider.
They instructed me to make an A record like so:
mail.mydomain.com ->> IP address of the server.
The MX records on my server at the provider should then take care of the rest.

However, after setting this A record, the whole website is redirecting back to my server, not only the mail.mydomain.com subdomain. So now mydomain.com points to mydomain.wordpress.com which points back to mydomain.com.

I don’t understand why this is happening, and how to set DNS in my WordPress account to get my email working.
