Help please creating dual access site for our charity using a mac and a pc
-
Our charity has looked at several opportunies for free hosting but the site creation is our problem. We used to have paid for hosting, but the site but it was designed using iWeb (Apple’s no longer supported programme) – it was brilliant but we can’t afford the hosting and have now found free hosting with a different provider BUT we because the site was created using iWeb, we can’t take what we have with us. We need to start again hence looking at WordPress.
Our problem is that we need an easy FREE WYSIWYG web builder BUT because several people have offered to maintain our site, we need to be sure it is able to be accessed from a Mac and/or a PC. Is this possible using WordPress please – and if so how?
Thanks
C

Hi there. There are two versions of WordPress: .com and .org.
At the moment you are on WordPress.com. With this version you have free hosting, but your web address will include the extension, “.wordpress.com” unless you upgrade to a custom domain. You don’t build the actual website from a coding perspective, so paying a web developer is not actually necessary. If you register a site it is immediately live on the web, you just need to fill it with content and customise the appearance. It is entirely browser-based and is supported for all major browsers. It doesn’t matter whether you’re using a PC or a Mac. You can add multiple users to a site, provided each have a WordPress.com username account and you can control what permissions each user has.
WordPress.org is for if you prefer a self-hosted site. You buy a domain and hosting account with the service provider of your choice. Then you download and install the WordPress.org software to that domain. That creates a basic website which you can then modify further, and you’re responsible for all technical aspects of the site, including security, backups, etc. As far as I know that is also entirely web-based so there shouldn’t be a difference between PC and Mac, but the WordPress.org forums will be able to give you a more definitive answer on that.

You’re very welcome.
Just to clarify one thing: if you go with WordPress.com you’ll be hosted by WordPress.com, but if you already own a domain elsewhere you can use it with your free WordPress.com site.
If you need any more information on WP.com, don’t hesitate to ask here.
