Help pointing WordPress to blogger
-
I need help pointing my website to my blogger. (racheljrowlands.blogspot.co.uk) I’ve already read all of WordPress’ AND Blogger’s instructions but I just can’t seem to get it right. According to Blogger I need to “point” a CNAME to their servers, but CNAME won’t let me “point”… it says “alias of”.
I’ve entered all of the CNAMEs as well as the A-Records several times and nothing works.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Rachel,
According to Blogger I need to “point” a CNAME to their servers, but CNAME won’t let me “point”… it says “alias of”.
I’ve entered all of the CNAMEs as well as the A-Records several times and nothing works.I checked your cname settings and currently you only have added one correct cname. On #4 on Blogger’s instructions, it says:
You should see an error, and two CNAMEs listed below. Each CNAME is composed of two parts – Name, Label or Host and Destination, Target or Points to. The first CNAME is the same for everyone, Name being “www” and Destination “ghs.google.com.” The second CNAME is particular to your blog and your Google Account, and is therefore different for each person.
So, you right now you have
w ww.racheljrowlands.com alias of ghs.google.com
but when the error occurred on Blogger’s side, another cname should’ve been provided. A bunch of random words and numbers that looks similar to the following (each cname is unique and the one I below I made up as an example):
dfadfadlljjdf gv-dfi7n5ihdfu9.dv.googlehosted.com
So, the first two cnames you have are correct, you just need to add the last one and you should be set.
Once done, It should look like:
w ww.racheljrowlands.com alias of ghs.google.com
dfadfadlljjdf alias of gv-dfi7n5ihdfu9.dv.googlehosted.comLet me know if you have any questions.
Thanks!

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. I put the second CNAME in and it’s showing up as:
dsdsjdsh.racheljrowlands.com alias of dsjhdsj
Is this correct? Seems like it shouldn’t be.
-
Oh I forgot to mention… http://www.racheljrowlands.com is pointing to the correct place, racheljrowlands.com is not, however.

Hi Rachel
I checked your dns settings and everything looks correct on this end.
racheljrowlands.com is not, however.
I’ve updated your A Records so that racheljrowlands.com is now linked to your Blogger site at http://www.racheljrowlands.com.
When I visit http://www.racheljrowlands.com, it’s pointing to Google, but there is a 404 error.
In Blogspot’s instructions, it says:
That’s it! Your blogspot.com address will soon redirect to your new custom domain — be patient, as it might take up to 24 hours for the redirect to start working. If you’re still seeing an error after 24 hours, it means your settings weren’t entered correctly and you should try the process a second time.
So, I’d make sure that everything is set up correctly on Blogger’s end, particularly step 11, and wait a full 24 hours.
If the site is still showing an error after that time, let me know and I will check things further for you.
Thanks!

Hi Rachel,
When I visit http://www.racheljrowlands.com, it goes to a Google 404 error page which means that the domain is pointing to Blogger correctly. If there is still an error, it is on Blogger’s end. I would get in contact with Blogger’s support and have them take a look at the domain settings on their end.
I checked your settings on our end and everything looks good to go.
I would get into contact with Blogger support and then let me know what they tell you.
Hopefully we can all resolve this soon for you!
Thanks!

I have spoken to Blogger and they say that this is wrong and needs to be deleted:
racheljrowlands.com. 300 IN A 192.0.78.25
racheljrowlands.com. 300 IN A 192.0.78.24They also say these need adding:
racheljrowlands.com. 3600 IN A 216.239.32.21
racheljrowlands.com. 3600 IN A 216.239.34.21
racheljrowlands.com. 3600 IN A 216.239.36.21
racheljrowlands.com. 3600 IN A 216.239.38.21Can you do this for me? You can read Blogger’s post here. I can’t figure out how to change this myself.

Hi @racheljrowlands, I hope you don’t mind me stepping in to take a look.
We’ve verified the CNAME and A records are all correct and have had time to propagate. Your domain points to Google, but they don’t know what to do with it once it’s there. Will you please run through this step once more and confirm with us when it’s done?
After your settings have been activated, you need to make sure Blogger knows about your custom domain so that Google can direct readers to your blog. Just head back to Blogger and update the information on your Settings | Basic tab. Find the area for “Publishing,” and click the link to add a custom domain.
Add a custom domain
Enter in the URL for your custom domain in the text box provided, and click Save. You can see pictures of this process here, in Step 11:
https://support.google.com/blogger/troubleshooter/1233381?hl=en#ts=1734115Please double check and let us know what settings are there. My best guess is that the custom domain is missing or has as typo. Thanks.

I don’t understand why you’re asking me to do this step again.. I’ve done it. Here are the settings i’ve put into Blogger:
Third-party domain settings: http://www.racheljrowlands.com
Underneath that it says:
Redirect racheljrowlands.com to http://www.racheljrowlands.com
And the tickbox is checked. I’ve also made sure there are no typos.
Blogger left me a response saying that the “domain root is incorrectly addressed”. I have already quoted part of what they said to me above your post as they included things that needed to be removed and added. You can see what they said in full on this forum topic. I don’t know how to do it myself.

I had you double check because we can see the domain points to google, but we are unable to check the settings for you there. Thank you for your patience as we try to help you solve this :)
Click on the link below, at any time necessary, to check what is setup for the base DNS addresses:
When you click on that link, do you see the addresses nitecruzr mentioned?
-
I appreciate your help, I’m not very good at all this technical stuff so it’s quite frustrating! No, I don’t see anything called nitecruzr mentioned there.
-
I was glad to see this news when I got back from lunch:
I clicked the X to publish back to Blogspot and then entered the custom domain again. That seems to have fixed it! Thank you SO much for your help. And thank you supernovia from WordPress for helping also. :)
Happy to hear that worked. Cheers!
(Oh, and nitecruzr was the person in the other forum.)
