Help!! Problem importing from another wordpress blog

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi I have a wordpress blog but I’ve been trying to change it to another one – i.e. with the same content and email address, but a different username and URL. My original blog was [deleted per request – drmike] and my new one is [deleted per request – drmike].

    My problem is this – when I imported the xml file from [deleted per request – drmike] into [deleted per request – drmike] the posts and comments have all messed up! Some of the posts appear more than once and the comments are not appearing under the posts they were meant for!

    I seem to have stuffed this up hugely!

    Please have a look at [deleted per request – drmike] and see what i mean! Is there a way I can delete all the content in the blog and re-import from [deleted per request – drmike] all over again? I don’t want to have to delete my new blog.

    Thanks very very much…

    You probably need to get in touch with staff for this; it sounds like a back end issue.

    And, i hate to break it to you, but this forum is indexed by search engines, so your post above with all the identifying info about changing your username, etc, can now be found. I’m only mentioning this because you had mentioned elsewhere that you wanted to change everything in order to keep a semblance of anonymity.

    Oh fabulous. So how come I can’t access this forum unless I’m signed in?

    Oh well, I just want a new blog in any case!

    Thanks for letting me know

    You can access it fine. http://wordpress.com/forums Heck, I log on to wordpress once I get here. :)

    It’s just that there’s no link on the front page unless you’re logged in. Cuts down on spammers and those who are hosted elsewhere who think they’re in the right place.

    Without seeing what’s going on with your blog, there’s little we can help with. Best bet would be to send in a feedback with specifics. They appear to have a tool to quicky remove posts anyway.

    What ever you do though, do *NOT* delete your blog. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.

    @drmike
    This blogger had a privacy issue before and created a new username and new blog because of it (imported content from the old one). Unfortunately she provided all the information above about the old username and old blog as well as the new ones because she didn’t understand that this forum was very public.

    No, I mean we can’t have access to teh backend to view what went wrong with the import.

    @drmike
    :O I understand you now but I’m wondering if it wouldn’t be helpful to the blogger if you deleted some of the information that she provided above in her first post. Otherwise her purpose for getting a new username and blog will be defeated.

    Hi thanks timethief – Mike can you delete the information about my old blog please? I didn’t know this blog is public, I thought it was just for wordpress users’ eyes only.

    I’m still having problems with straightening out my new blog. I’ve sent wordpress messages but not much response. i know my blog isn’t as important as some of the others as it’s just a personal diary really, but I’m seriously thinking of deleting them both and going elsewhere though. :(

    I think I got them all.

    What other issues are you having? Can’t help unless I know what they are. :)

    Thanks Dr mike, but you’ve left one name still in there :)

    um well its a long story! I exported all the content from my original blog onto my desktop. Then I started up a completely new blog, with a new username, url and email. Then I tried to import the content from my desktop into my new blog. At first I got a “timeout” message but i kept trying. Eventually the content uploaded but there was a message saying that the content was already there! On the blog itself I noticed that several posts have appeared repeatedly and many of the comments are now randomly appearing under the wrong posts.

    I sent a feedback to wordpress and a guy deleted all the content for me. So then I tried importing it again and the same thing has happened. I’ve tried it with both Safari and Firefox (I’m on a mac) but to no avail. I’ve sent another message to wordpress but its been two days now and no answer.

    Is there some sort of corruption on my blog? Or do you think there is a problem with the XML file? I’ve re-exported the file a couple of times now just in case that was the problem. Should I delete my blog entirely? I’m currently using the Misty template but its the same problem with any template.

    Thanks for any help you can give

    Sorry I forgot I was signed in under my other name! (getting all confused now)
