help setting up custom domain

  • Unknown's avatar

I need help setting up custom domain. I have read the three options for this, but I am still confused. Here is my situation:
    1.I have a free wordpress.com blog.
    2. I also have a domain (I THINK that’s what it is–that would be my donaldcherry.com thing which I have through a company called Siteground?).
    3. I do not want to mess up any links I have floating out there in the world at blog sites and stuff. In other words, I want the old teachyourselfjapanese.wordpress.com link to work. I also have a redirect from donaldcherry.com/trombone. I would like these to both continue to work.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    You want Domain Mapping: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

That will give you two sets of addresses, both work,

teachyourselfjapanese.wordpress.com – all the links for that will keep working

donaldcherry.com – will start to work and your visitors will see this name in their browser window

Not completely sure about the redirect: donaldcherry.com/trombone.

BUT – if you make a PAGE on your blog – then if someone goes to donaldcherry.com/trombone – they will land on a valid address and not get a 404 Page Not Found – then on the Page “trombone” put a note “welcome to my new web site, click here to visit the home page – and make “click here” a link to the home page (or any other page / post on your blog

For more help on the redirect I will flag this for the staff but they are backed up for a few days with help requests

Thanks auxclass! One clarification, if that’s alright. You say:

donaldcherry.com – will start to work and your visitors will see this name in their browser window

Bit confused by this. Right now I already have a page at donalcherry.com. I want this to remain, of course. So what would the new blog URL be?

  • Unknown's avatar

If you domain map as above – visitors to donalcherry.com will end up on the front page of teachyourselfjapanese.wordpress.com and the visitors will see donalcherry.com in their browser address bar with the content from teachyourselfjapanese.wordpress.com being displayed in the browser window –

Visitors to donalcherry.com will not see the current under construction page – that will go away and you can stop paying the hosting for that site –

Do you have email using donalcherry.com? If so that will be need to handled – there are several ways, start here for options: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/add-email/

Thanks again. First, a slight correction–it is donaldcherry.com (not donalcherry.com).

Well, that is a problem because I want to keep the page that is at donaldcherry.com. Also, I am paying Siteground for this domain, and I also have donaldcherry.com/moodle and donaldcherry.com/students and donaldcherry.com/silentway there, all of which I desperately want to keep, so I will keep paying for that hosting.

OK – on to option two, map as a sub-domain: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-subdomain/

That will give you an address like: blog.donaldcherry.com or teachyourselfjapanese.donaldcherry.com

Or what ever you want to put in front of “.donaldcherry.com” (note the period) – then skip some of what I wrote above

Thanks, auxclass. Or maybe I can set up a subdomain with Siteground and then map to that, saving myself 5 bucks. By the way, just to check, the main reason I’m doing this is to stop ads on my blog. This is a necessary step?

  • Unknown's avatar

Oh, think I misthought. Mapping to sub-domain is 13 bucks. Already cheap, huh? Well, cheaper than the 18 buck option.

  • Unknown's avatar

Map a Sub-domain is $ 13.- / year same as regular domain mapping

If you want to stop ads – buy the No Ads Upgrade $ 30.- / year (I use it on the site linked to my name) – no need to any mapping.

Gotcha. Thanks again and again. How about if I want to monetize my blog? THEN I need to do the mapping thing, right? Hey, sorry to bother you with all this!

  • Unknown's avatar

How about if I want to monetize my blog?

The only way to make money from ads is to have a custom domain name, then you apply to the WordAds program here, and if you have enough traffic and you are accepted you can share the ad income with WordPress.COM. You are NOT allowed to sell your own ads, put Google Adsense etc on your blog here without getting it suspended

Well, cheaper than the 18 buck option.

The $ 18.- / year option is to buy a custom domain name & map the custom domain name to your blog here.

Look like @auxclass was able to walk you through everything! Thanks auxclass!

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions about the subdomain.

    Cheers!
