Help setting up page for blog!
-
Hi I’m trying to set my blog site up but am struggling with layout. I am registered blind. I have done initial bits but it has a couple of pictures, apparently of books. I’m not sure what theme to use but want it pretty basic. I am open to suggestions and any advice would be appreciated. I want to finish everything so I can post my first blog.
Thanks in advance

Every theme has a detailed theme description page. The one you are using is one is at https://wordpress.com/theme/edin
All support docs are at https://en.support.wordpress.com/ where we have a search box as the most prominent feature on the page.

I appreciate your reply but as I stated I am struggling setting up. Would someone help me more if I payed?
-
Staff will assist you as soon as they can. It is a weekend and there are fewer of them working so be patient while waiting please.

You are welcome. I am visually challenged but I did not want to suggest that you get an upgrade just to get live chat support, because it still comes down to the fact that there are fewer Staff working on weekends. Staff will definitely help you when they can, as well as, every time you post a thread if you state you are blind in the thread.

Hi there,
Can you give a bit more information on what you are trying to do? When you say “it has a couple of pictures”, are you referring to what’s already on the theme, or what you want to add?
New sites come with some default content, so if that’s the images you are referring to, the easiest option might be for me to completely empty your site for you so it has no content at all. That way you can start adding your own content without having to work around what’s already there. Let me know if you want to do this.
As for the theme itself, if you want something simple, I’d recommend you go for a minimalist theme that shows as little as possible extra stuff on the screen besides your content itself. You can find a list of our minimalist themes that are also accessibility-ready here:
https://wordpress.com/themes/free/filter/accessibility-ready+minimal
I restricted that to free themes only, but there are a few more options if you include Premium themes.
There aren’t many, though Bosco looks quite nice to me:
https://wordpress.com/theme/bosco
I’d suggest you first settle on a theme. Once you’ve done that let me know so I can empty the site out for you, and then you can start adding your content.

Hi Kokkieh,
Thanks so much for getting back to me and apologies for only just replying, been away a couple of days. I think your suggestion for completely emptying my site will be the best thing as you say. I also think Bosco is a good theme. It was the images I was referring too. I’m knew to all this and need something as easy to use as possible. I’ve seen a couple of people who use WordPress emmie1ou.wordpress.com and joekennymusic.wordpress.com and their sites seem pretty plain.
Anything you recommend is much appreciated and help. I want to be able to add my links i.e.; Facebook, instagram etc
Thanks Sue

No problem on not replying right away :)
If you’re happy with Bosco, it would be best if you first activated that theme, and then I can remove the demo content on the site for you so you can start adding your own. To activate the theme, click the Activate button on the Bosco showcase page:
https://wordpress.com/theme/bosco
To learn how everything works on WordPress.com, please work through this tutorial:
It will take you through all the basics around setting up your site and creating new posts and pages.
And if you come across features that aren’t fully accessible, please let us know about it.
-
Hi Kokkieh I have activated Bosco like you suggested. If you can sort it out for me when you can.
Thanks
-
Okay, the demo content is now gone from your site. You can now start creating the posts and pages you want.
I left the Contact Info widget there as it looks like you might have added that yourself. If you don’t want to use that widget, you can remove it from the Widgets section of the Customizer.
Let me know if you have any questions about how things work, but the tutorial I linked to above should cover all the basics :)

Hi I have read the links and understand some of it. I thought my site would have a menu but can’t see how to create one. Do I have to start blog or add a page first to do this? Apologies for not being that technical as no a lot of people will see my questions as stupid.
Thanks
-
There is no such thing as a stupid question.
If you go to My Site ->Blog Posts and publish a post, that will appear on your site’s front page. This is what you wil use for the regular updates on your site. Readers can sign up to follow your blog, and then they’ll be notified each time you publish a post like that. Posts do not appear in your menu.
If you go to My Site ->Pages and publish a page, that will appear in your site’s menu automatically. Pages are used for more permanent content, like a page saying what your site is about, or a contact page.
You can also manually edit your menu in the Customizer. For example, you can add a link to a different site in your menu, or you can add a category link so all posts published in that category will appear under that menu item, in addition to appearing on the front page.
