Help! Transferring website to WordPress

I have a business website that was designed by a company using WordPress. I have always paid other companies to host and manage my site, but they cost SO much I’m ready to try it on my own. I’ve been looking into Wordpess.com vs. WordPress.org. .org seems more technical and customizable, and .com seems more simple, but less customizable. My question is, can I transfer my existing site to WordPress.com or, because it’s a custom template do I have to use the .org site? My website is fairly basic, I just want to be able to add and edit content as needed, but I don’t know which platform is best. If I did wordpress.com I’d use the business level. Also, as far as SEO and visibility goes, is one platform better than the other, or are they about the same and it depends on my content? Thanks for your help, I’m confused about what would be best, and nervous I’ll make the wrong choice.

  • Hi there!

If you’re considering purchasing our Business plan, you will have pretty the same features as a self-hosted WordPress site. Since you mentioned that your site is a simple one, I don’t think you will be missing anything.

Just to clarify, about WordPress.com and WordPress.org, if your site was created with WordPress and it’s hosted with another company, it’s already using the WordPress.org software. You will probably want to find a new host then: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/.

On WordPress.com, you have everything in one place (hosting, domain) so it’s easier to manage, and on plan Business, you can access support 24/7 via live chat.

As for SEO, there are really no differences, as you said, it’s more about your content. On plan Business, you can install plugins like Yoast, to have even more control over your SEO.

We have a detailed guide on how you can migrate your site to WordPress.com here:
