Help using html in excerpt
-
I keep reading that you can use html in excerpts but I can’t seem to figure out how. I am using Inuit Types and the excerpts work just the way I’d like except I want to add a picture (to display in the category listings). I have purchased the CSS editing add-on if that makes a difference in my options.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The excerpt function does not work in all themes, but it does work in the theme you are using.
What you have to do is to write the post, put in any images you want, etc., and then when you are ready, switch to the HTML tab, copy out the part you want to be in the except on the categories and archives pages, and then paste that into the excerpt field. Do note that this is going to override the excerpt on the main page as well.

Wonderfrul–I just tested this and it works just like I hoped. I was confused by the fact that it still looks like html in the excerpt box–but it looks fine displayed. I had already anticipated the double image issue on the main page, but it was a great heads up because a lot of people probably wouldn’t have, Since I’ve already been playing with the CSS I think I can take care of that relatively easily.

Here’s a function called “Smart Excerpts” that automatically grabs your first two paragraphs (by default) allowing several HTML tags (images, boldface, italics, links, etc).

Trying to set up a blog with Inuit Types. But can’t find the ‘excerpt field’ on the edit screen for posts. Read (and reread) the ‘tip’ page for excerpts, found this thread in a search result. Everyone mentions the excerpt function with Inuit, but there is no excerpt field on my post edit screen. Nor are there excerpts of the posts on the front page (only feature post images).
Ideas? -
Izvolk: Click “Screen Options” at the top-right. Check the “Excerpt” box at the top. Now, you’ll see it below the editor.
-
Also, the blog front in Inuit Types displays excerpts for normal posts but no excerpts for featured posts. So, if you want excerpts on your front page, the number of featured posts (set in Appearance > Theme Options) must be smaller than the number of posts per page (set in Settings > Reading).

I found the check box for showing post excerpts in the edit mode. Thank you for that explanation.
Now, regarding confusion about designation of ‘feature’ and ‘normal’ posts:
Following the suggestion above, I designated two feature posts and 6 posts/page. I have two draft (experimental) posts, both with feature images. Those images are on the front page, where I have defined two columns and (for now) only two feature images. There are no excerpts of either post below the featured images. I have searched in vain for any check box or other to designate a post as either.
Then I asked myself: ‘Does attaching a featured image to a post automatically define it as a ‘featured post’?’ So I experimented: In Inuit Theme Options, I reduced the number of Featured Posts to one. Bingo. The front page now has one featured image with link to respective post, and one post excerpt below. The post below also has a featured image attached to that post, yet it is not in the area above where the featured images show. Thus, if the preceding suggestion is true (“the blog front in Inuit Types displays excerpts for normal posts but no excerpts for featured posts.”), then attaching feature posts to any post does not automatically designate it as a ‘featured post’.
So, I am still confused. How does one designate a post as ‘featured’ or ‘normal’?
I appreciate your patience with this newbie. :)

Does attaching a featured image to a post automatically define it as a ‘featured post’?
No, featured image and featured post are independent of one another.
Featured image = thumbnail on front page.
Featured post(s) = highlighted latest post(s).

THANK YOU for that link!! Very helpful. I have bookmarked it for future reference.
Now I understand (mostly) ;)
I can now begin to write real content instead of struggling to learn how to first use the template .
Thanks again.
