Help verifying with Google, Yahoo etc.

    Dear All,

Support is closed currently, so I am asking this in here.

I am a WP newbie and cannot figure out how too “Verify” my site with Google, Yahoo and Bing. It says to Enter your meta key “content” value to verify your blog? Is there a SIMPLE way to do this or work around?

    For META DATA it says:

“Copy the meta tag below, and paste it into your site’s home page. It should go in the <head> section, before the first <body> section.”

I cannot add this to my site template as I do not have the CSS upgrade.

    For HTML method it says:

download the following HTML file and upload. When I try to upload, it will not give me an “HTML” file extension option. :(

And this is just for GOOGLE (is it different for Bing and Yahoo -I haven’t even got around to trying those yet).

Am I missing something rather silly? Any help would be appreciated.

    GD

The Google verification isn’t entirely necessary as WordPress automatically updates Google about new blogs and new posts:

You can find general information here:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/search-engines/

For the specific issues with google verification and wordpress.com see this forum thread:

Have you followed the process wordpress.com has set up with the 3 big search engines to verify your blog? Se here please > http://en.support.wordpress.com/webmaster-tools/

    Had same troubles…

@sberkun = “The Google verification isn’t entirely necessary”, if that’s the case then why is it included in the template editor then please?

@timethief, of course we looked in that section, that how/where that lingo came from. please re-read the above post.

What needs to be posted somewhere in plain English, is to:

copy and past that code (or Meta data that they provide -i.e. “Google” etc.) inside the blank field in the editor area.

Then in order to make it work (i.e.Verify properly), you can simply create a PAGE (yes, PAGE not post) and paste that same exact Meta data inside the body of the PAGE section and then click “Save As draft”.

Then go back to Google (or other) and click the verify button and walla! works perfect.

Not sure this has to be so hard as so many newbies and or WP users seem to have trouble figuring out how to do this. I spent hours on end trying to get this to work initially.

*The others who do not chime in probably just gave up on it as it is sometimes frustrating finding out simple info in the forums and or from others users who point out the same info links.

Otherwise WP rocks and love the service!!

    -CK
