HELP! Want to change my domain name – will I lose followers?

I am currently at proverbsgirl.wordpress.com. I want to take out wordpress.com. I ALSO want to change it from proverbsgirl to something entirely different. For instance, if I wanted my new address to be http://abcname.com, again, change the domain all together, will I lose my followers? I am very concerned about this, totally not technically savvy, PLEASE HELP!
Also, I want to add email through godaddy.com. Do I need to set that up before I change my name, or can I add an email at any time? I have not purchased the email yet – should I purchase the email before or after I change my name?
I sure hope that makes sense.

You won’t lose your followers. you WILL lose google rank, though, and it takes about four months to gain it back. Still, I recommend getting a custom domain name. Be very sure about the name you choose, though. It annoys readers when you continually change it.

So, to clarify:
a) I should NOT get a go daddy.com email until AFTER I change my domain name?
b) If I switch to abcname.com through wordpress.com, I WILL keep my current followers.
Question – do my readers/followers need to be informed that I’m changing, or will they automatically know?

c neither. Since buying a custom domain keeps the old one active and adds a new URL, you don’t have to tell them, but you can if you want. All the old links will still work.

So, if I change my name, if ever anyone is looking for proverbs girl.wordpress.com, they WILL be rerouted to the new domain. If not, is there some way to ensure that I can reroute folks?

That’s in my post. Suffice to say the reason we purchase domain mapping is so when the original .wordpress.com URLs are clicked anywhere on the internet the visitor will be seamlessly redirected to the same content under the new domain URL.

Great – So, even if my new domain name is completely different than my current name, it’s a relief to know that folks will be rerouted to my new domain if they type in the old one.
I’m not switching to wordpress.org .. for now, I’m staying with .com.
As for my email that I’ll set up with godaddy.com, I can do that whenever, correct? Meaning, before or after I purchase my new domain on wordpress?

One more question – Do I change the domain first to the new name and get that squared away. Once that is done: Example: abc.wordpress.com. After I have successfully changed my name, then I go through the upgrade premium process to get my new name without wordpress – correct?
So, change the current free account to the name I want – Once it’s changed, then go through the premium paid process so it’s without the wordpress and will just be abc.com ..

You can map your-name.com to any WordPress.COM blog here – no need to change proverbsgirl.wordpress.com/ to anything else – domain mapping as explained above just changes the address (URL) that visitors see – the old address will still also work fine
Register your-name.com any place you want- then do the domain mapping / get the upgrade you want – HOWEVER take a look at what is included in the $ 99.– bundle and make sure that when you get it you need enough of the parts to save some money – if you just want to change the name with domain mapping that is only $ 13.– / year
