  can the balloons in balloon theme have color?

  Which blog are you referring to please? What is the URL? The one linked to above is not wearing that theme.

  http://strideforlife5k.wordpress.com is the site. I am wondering if customizing the site will allow me to add color to the balloons. Thank you kindly for your help!

  Since the balloons consist of images, it wouldn’t be possible to add colour within the balloons themselves, but it would be possible with the Custom CSS to add a background colour to the various sections containing balloons. Here’s a rough example of what it would look like to add purple behind one set of balloons:
