Help with blog title and category display in sunspot theme

  Hello, I am looking for help with sunspot theme.
  I would like to do two things.

  1) add a title to the front page, that runs across the top of the page, like a blog title (the header for the whole site is not relevant to the front page blog title)

  2) I would like to display the category archives more like the front page, ie two collumns, with shorter exerts more like thumbnails. Is this possible to do?

  Look forward to hearing from you, please respond as though talking to a 10 year old I am new to all this and trying to learn from scratch!
