Help with changing 'themes' and deleting unwanted blogs

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi there, I am very new to all of this, today I tried my hand at starting a blog using an old bit of a review I wrote. Not being too sure how/what I needed to do, I got a blog set up but it didn’t look quite the way I wanted it too and I also noticed that it had used what I supposed would be my user name as the blog name, rather than the tagline which I imagined would be the name of the blog. Long story short, I created a second blog rather quickly but this one I seem to have created without choosing a ‘theme’ at all and as such it is in a style I would not have chosen. After several fruitless attempts at trying to alter the appearance of either site (all I really want to do is work out how to change the ‘theme’) and no idea how to delete/start again, I have sort of reached an impasse. Hope someone can help. Many thanks in advance. JP

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,
Hopefully, what I post below will be helpful.

Themes are just “skins”. You can quickly and easily change themes on any WordPress.COM hosted blog to another one found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ and no data will be lost or negatively affected by the change. The only time you may have to do some work is if you are changing to a dramatically different theme and have done any CSS editing.

Provided you are logged in as Admin under the same username account that registered the blog go to Dashboard > Appearance > Themes, Browse themes until you find one you like and click “activate” or type in the name of the theme you want to use when it appears.

After you change your theme all you need to do is go here Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets > Inactive Widgets and re-install them where you want them to appear. The widget contents and settings will be the same as they were prior to changing themes.

re: the front page error message

    Nothing Found
It seems we can’t find what you’re looking for. Perhaps searching can help.

There is nothing wrong with your site. By default the front page of the blog is the only page that will display all published posts on it. As soon as you publish a post not a page the front page error message and searchbox that appears on every new WordPress.COM blog will be gone. http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/

    Theme set up
Every theme has a detailed theme description page with set up instructions like this one http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/harmonic/ and a live demo site like this one https://harmonicdemo.wordpress.com/for your http://japes75.wordpress.com/ blog

Deleting a blog or making it private
All blogs are independent websites so what you do one one has no effects on any others. To delete a free hosted WordPress.COM blog you must be logged in under the exact same username account that registered a blog to delete the blog. To prevent accidental or inadvertent deletion of blogs, there are multiple warnings given that blog deletion is permanent and irreversible. Lastly, a verification link is sent in an email and must be clicked to delete a blog. If clicking that link does not work then copy and paste it into your upper browser window and click. http://en.support.wordpress.com/delete-site/

Deleted blog URLs are not recycled, regardless of who registered and deleted them and no exceptions are made.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/recycling-blog-names/

Alternatively, to change blog visibility to private go to > Settings > Reading scroll to Blog Visibility and choose option 3 . See the guide here http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

I also noticed that it had used what I supposed would be my user name as the blog name, rather than the tagline which I imagined would be the name of the blog.

The Site title (blog name) and/or the optional Tagline can be changed on the top of this page at any time. > Settings > General … “save changes”.

That is exactly where search engine spiders look for the site title and removing it from there can cause issues with getting your content indexed. Note that the site title (blog name) and blog address URL do not have to be the same but it’s better for SEO (search engine optimization) if they are the same.

WordPress.com sells bundles upgrades. We can “preview” changes in the theme customizer that do not actually display on the blog unless we purchase the upgrade.

If you have not purchased the Premium bundle that contains the custom design upgrade note that no changes you try out aside from those such as Custom Background, Custom Header, etc. which are stated on the theme description pages in the features column (right hand side) will be visible to visitors.
    Premium bundle details http://store.wordpress.com/plans/premium/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/editing-css/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/custom-fonts/

If you are using the preview mode for the Custom Design upgrade some of the settings in that mode will save but they won’t show up on the front end unless you purchase the upgrade.

To go back to the free options, go to Appearance → Themes → Customize → Colors and click the “exit the preview” link in yellow at the top of the panel on the right.

Hello, just a quick thank you. I don’t seem to have an option to ‘reply’ direct so I am using this window.
