Help with Crazy Domains email set up

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi everyone,
I’m trying to set up my email account for RelationshipFree.com – it’s hosted with Crazy Domains. I’ve pointed my DNS servers to that account and it’s still not working. Does anyone have any step-by-step instructions for a non-technical person about what I need to do? This has been going on for months, Crazy Domains can’t help me and it’s really frustrating me!
    Thanks,
    Sarah.

    Hi Sarah,

I will be more than happy to help out. I will need something from you first though. I will need the exact MX records which Crazy Domains gave to you when you set up your mail account with them. MX stands for “Mail Exchange” and are what allows us to route your mail correctly.

If you could let me know what those are, I can make sure that your domain is pointed properly.

    Thanks so much in advance!

Thanks so much for your help in advance.
I’m not all that technical (as you may have noted!) but I was just talking to them tonight and they want it MX record: mail.relationshipfree.com
And I did that. All good.
But now WordPress is asking me for forwarding? So I did my customised email to my customised email and that didn’t send yet. Not sure what I’ve done, but I think I’m breaking the system here!
Does this answer your question though?

OK, that first part is good to know (and we don’t need to do the forwarding bit, your mail will take the place of that).

But if you are doing an MX record of mail.relationshipfree.com, that means we also need what is called an A Record for their mailserver. It will be an IP address (a set of 4 groups of numbers like 123.45.678.9, but unique to their servers). They should be able to provide that to you as well.

Sorry that this is such a hassle for you!

Oh, and P.S. It’s possible that instead of it being an A Record (the numbers), they could give you a CNAME, which is a word-based address. If they do, that’s fine too. Just let me know and I’ll take care of it. :)

    Thank you so much!!

I have another website (HappinessWeekly.org) and that’s all set up and works well so I was trying to copy the pattern to get the same thing working.

I hope you can help me – and either way, I really appreciate you trying. Thank you :)

    Sarah.

OK, that might actually have been what I needed. Assuming your mail is on the same servers, then your email should start working in the next hour or two (propagation needs to be allowed to occur). Now if they are keeping your email for this account on a different server as your happinessweekly.org account, this won’t really work and you’ll still need to get a hold of them and get that IP address I was talking about. That should be the last piece of the puzzle though, I swear!

It failed again :( I’m so untechnical I don’t know whether to be angry with WordPress or Crazy Domains! Of course they keep saying the issue is WP not them…

So the name server needs to be pointing back to Crazy Domains which is:
    A record = 103.254.138.194

I’ve updated that … do I need to do anything else?

This is a totally separate account to Happiness Weekly – I was just basing it on that as a model for trying to know what on earth I’m doing! I had a friend set that one up for me, but then they moved overseas :( So now I’m computer illiterate AND friendless :P Just kidding! Let me know what you think.

    Thanks again for your help.

    Hey Sarah!

Alright – so it looks like we have two records in place for relationshipfree.com. We have the MX record and an A record that directs mail.relationshipfree.com to the IP address you mention. Those look like the same format as the other domain you mention (Happiness Weekly). Provided you’re using the same email setup for Happiness Weekly, the email for relationshipfree.com should start working correctly.

If it does not start working, perhaps we’re missing a record on our side that needs to be put in. If that’s the case, could you ask Crazy Domains exactly what records need to be put in place? It would be helpful if they could list them out like this (these are just examples):

    CNAME email email.secureserver.net
    CNAME mail pop.secureserver.net
    MX mailstore1.europe.secureserver.net 10
    MX smtp.europe.secureserver.net 0

I’m really sorry for the frustration! We’re here to help until we can get this up and running.

OK this still isn’t working… I’ve been on the phone to Crazy Domains every single night for the past fortnight … and their hold music is terrible! *cringe*

Can you please make it so it says the following on the Domain Management Page:

    A Relationshipfree.com handled by WordPress.com

    NS Relationshipfree.com handled by WordPress.com

    CNAME *.Relationshipfree.com handled by WordPress

MX Relationshipfree.com mail handled by mail.relationshipfree.com with priority 10

    A mail.relationshipfree.com points to 103.254.138.194

And then is it possible to update the EMAIL page to read:

This domain currently has custom mail servers defined in its DNS settings. This means that WordPress.com Email Forwarding is not available for this domain, and that you should manage your email with your email provider.

The email servers for this domain are:

    mail.relationshipfree.com.

I just got off the phone from them again and they said this:
Mail A Record point to 103.254.138.194
    Host name mail.relationshipfee.com

MX Record Domain name should point to: mail.relationshipfree.com
    Priority 10

That’s all they would give me.

    Does that solve the problem?

Because when I look at the record in the back end the MX record appears to be the issue because it says:
relationshipfree.com.relationshipfree.com (the second one is faded)

And I have a feeling, in all my technical wisdom that I have, that THAT is the issue. Can we alter that?

Thanks for your help, Happiness Heros – you’re doing a good job, I just want to put this to bed so I can start my business! :)

    Thanks,
    Sarah.

    Hey Sarah,

I have deleted and re-added your domain records to match the records you listed. They will take a few hours at least to take effect. I have set a reminder to check back in this afternoon to make sure they took effect. I want to get you going on your business as well!

    Hey Sarah,

The DNS settings should be correct on our end. You can see them from this page by clicking “Edit Domain”:

    https://relationshipfree.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains

Can you take a second look just to make sure we have them right?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Success!! We did it!!!

I’ve tried and tested it and it works perfectly now! I’m so excited!!

Thank you so much for all your help and your patience – I really appreciate it.

Great support, thank you both! :)

    Sarah :)))
