Help with CSS Edit to remove theme author name
-
Relatively new to CSS, so please hold the snickering to a minimum. Designing a WP site for a client; they like paperpunch theme; they paid for No Ads upgrade and CSS Upgrade… and are upset that the theme author’s name “WordPress blog” and subsequent links still float at the bottom of the page. After much internet browsing I still cannot find a CSS way to erase the offending footer links. I am aware of the various arguments for or against truly free themes and the various authors rights, but I must stress that for these folks, this issue is a deal-breaker. On my own site I do not mind the presence of the author’s name.
Kindly let me know how to remove the above info via the CSS edit feature.
Thank you. -
This is against the WordPress.com Terms of Service and by doing so you run the risk of having your client’s site suspended or even deleted. It is possible you could restyle the links to make them less prominent or re-phrase the attribution wording to something your client can cope with but volunteers won’t be able to help without a link to the blog in question.

@Luke: WP.com doesn’t allow you to hide the grey admin bar, but removing the footer credits is allowed. See here:

@Panos, that was my thinking too, but here is the latest from staff saying it is a no-no.

@Panos
Please see this thread for the update on not removing gooter infromation.

Please read that thread I linked to above. Note that we Volunteers have been requested to report all wordpress.com blogs we see where footer information has been “hidden” and that I have agreed to do that. -

@TSP & TT: Thanks, I hadn’t seen that thread.
But I must admit I’m not convinced by Lance’s to-and-fro replies: “we don’t allow”, then “encourage them not to”, then “we’d rather you didn’t”. Reply 2 and reply 3 don’t equal “a no-no” or “against the TOS”. Since the older piece of information comes from Matt and Mark, I would welcome something more definitive (maybe from Matt, or in the TOS).

Staff have changed their minds/policy has changed/there has been a difference of opinion before. This is a no-win situation for the volunteers, but the BEST advice for the OP is “removing those links MAY cause serious problems, and you should wait and contact staff once they’re back on the 2nd”.
-
Thank you for all the replies.
If one purchases a “no-ad” upgrade feature then that should be honored. Period. That link at the bottom is advertising, plain and simple. If this is not something that can be rectified then it may behoove folks to go to a truly ad-free service elsewhere.
-
Sorry, no “period”. The No-Ads upgrade doesn’t mean what you would like it to mean, it means no adsense:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/no-ads/
And acknowledging the work of others is not “advertising, plain and simple”. -
I guess I fail to understand. Jonathan Turley has his legal blog here on WordPress.COM. Domain Mapping and No ads upgrades. He is one of the most respected authorities on Constitutional Law here in the US and HE does not seem to have a problem with the WordPress.com at the bottom.
So if someone that is respected all over the world has no problem with the tag why do others have a problem?
Taking the authors name off the credits is just plain rude – neither you nor your client designed the Theme. would your client like it if I took a chunk of his site and put it on another site with not even a mention? My guess is they would be hopping mad.
Just my $ 0.035 (adjusted for inflation) opinion.

I asked the support staff directly about the issue in regards to custom CSS a week or so ago and got this reply from Ryan M which should clarify things:
1) You can’t hide advertising units.
2) You can’t hide the admin bar or make changes to any part of it.
3) You can’t hide the footer attribution and links.
