Help with Domain Name and Email Account

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

I have created a website for my business (namasterestaurant.wordpress.com), however, I would like to use my current domain name (namasterestaurant.com.au) which I own as the domain for the new website I created using wordpress.
Is domain mapping the best way to go about it? Do I need to upgrade to a premium account in order to use my current domain name?

Also, I have an email account linked to my current domain ([redacted]), what happens to it once I map the domain to wordpress site? Will it continue to work as normal? Do I need to do something for it work normally after domain mapping? If yes, then how do I do it?

Please help, I am not very familiar with all the technical bits.

Thanks, I look forward to your reply.

  • Hi there, sure, you can use domain mapping. You don’t need Premium to do this, although domain mapping is included in a premium site. Premium offers a lot of great features, so feel free to add that, or just continue and add the domain:

First map it using these steps:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Then edit your DNS to add email settings from your current provider:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/custom-dns/

Then point the domain to our name servers:
    ns1.wordpress.com
    ns2.wordpress.com
    ns3.wordpress.com

If you need help with any of this, let us know. You can respond here, or you can reach us at http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact

    Cheers!

    Hello supernovia,

Thanks for your reply. Is it important to edit the DNS settings for the email to work correctly? Can’t I just leave it as it is and just map my domain to the wordpress site?

  • If you point the domain at our name servers, our name servers will need to know where to direct email. So the DNS settings here would be important. Here are those steps again:

    1) Get mapping
    2) Enter DNS settings for email
    3) Point the domain at our name servers

You will also want to be sure you make the new domain primary after it’s pointed here. These are definitely the steps you’ll need to complete, so if you need help completing any of them, let us know. Cheers :)
