Help with Featured Images

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

In order to customize my WordPress site the way I would like it to be, I’ve chosen to use a FSE theme; currently, I have the “Twenty Twenty-Two” theme installed. This allows me to make many changes, which is great!

The problem: by default, all FSE themes cause the Featured Images (in Single post and Portfolio project views) to fit within a predefined template column-width.

While this display is fine on phones, images with a vertical/portrait orientation (such as most of my waterfall photography) are scaled way too large, when viewed on desktops and laptops.

I would like the Featured Images (in Single post and Portfolio project views) to be unchanged – that is, to display in the dimensions with which the image was uploaded.

Can someone please provide me with CSS to accomplish this goal, using the “Twenty Twenty-Two” theme?

    Thanks.

  • Hey there,

While this display is fine on phones, images with a vertical/portrait orientation (such as most of my waterfall photography) are scaled way too large, when viewed on desktops and laptops.

I would like the Featured Images (in Single post and Portfolio project views) to be unchanged – that is, to display in the dimensions with which the image was uploaded.

I’ve taken a good look, and that’s not a feature of the theme or editor at this point. I’d imagine with most people uploading more than full size images, it’s unlikely to become a standard setting, but we can dig into that more if you’d like.

One thing you can do for more precise control is to simply remove the Featured Image from the single post template. Get rid of it altogether.

Then when editing your posts, set the featured image for use on social media and elsewhere on the site. Bear in mind it absolutely will be cropped in odd ways on social media. But it won’t display at all on a single post page.

Instead, you’ll add it as a regular image to your post as well, using whatever sizing or layout you’d like, controlling that layout one post at a time. You can use patterns for some ideas: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/block-pattern/

Does that help? I know there are more enhancements to Featured Images coming up, too, if you prefer to wait. Let us know and we’ll see if we can find the right place to add your request.

Thank you for sharing this helpful information, @supernovia.

That is a creative approach to resolving the (IMO, too large) scaling of vertical images, as displayed on Single posts.

I think it would work. However, with approx. 3900 posts, the amount of time to enact per post changes would be exorbitant. Perhaps if there was a way (batch) to select (vertical only images) from a list available in the Block Editor, I would consider it.

And, as you mention, the idea of upcoming enhancements to Featured Images…perhaps it’s better to wait and see what develops.

    Thanks again.
