help with galleries and photo descriptions

Hi there,
I have a page with a number of photos . I would also like to have a description of the content of the photo when the reader clicks on it, or hovers over the picture. Is this possible?I have edited each photo in the media library with alt Captions and Description but I can’t seem to get it to display.
Any help appreciated..thank you

Edit your Gallery on that page to link to the Image Attachment page rather than to the Media File. That will display the Description you’ve added to your images. https://en.support.wordpress.com/gallery/#editing-a-gallery-or-slideshow
If you don’t already, you might want to look at displaying your Gallery photos in the Photo Carousel, which may give you a larger display. https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/media-settings/#image-gallery-carousel
Please note that both Image Attachment Pages and the Photo Carousel have comment boxes where your visitors can leave comments. If you would rather that the comment box not display, and commenting is turned on for your entire site, you’ll have to edit each Image in the Media Library (list view) to turn off comments in the Discussion module.

Actually, I've hit another snag…When you click on each photo, it opens to a new page with the title and description/ text–that's all good. But on this page you can also click on “next” and “previous”, which is showing the photos without the changes I made and in the wrong order, and then also random other photos not associated with the page.

You’ll then want to enable the Photo Carousel in your Media Settings, as I mentioned above.
Just to explain, when you link to Attachment pages, they display in the order that they were uploaded in. If you changed the order of the images after you uploaded them (in the Gallery’s Media Manager), the Attachment pages won’t reflect that change. Only the Photo Carousel will.

I’ve enabled Photo Carousel but I can’t get my computer to scroll down from the photo to see if the text is displayed.

Hi again,
Don’t try to grab the scrollbar on the right; keep your cursor in the area of the photo and scroll. It works for me in Chrome44 and I can see the text under the photos.
If that isn’t happening for you, let me know what browser and version you are using.

Hi,
I have Chrome 44 but I tried your suggestion and it won’t budge. The only way I can read the text is to click on the “comment” bubble, and it will show. But you can’t view the photo and text simultaneously. Is it just a limitation of Carousel?

Are you able to “scroll” in the Photo Carousel with the up/down buttons on your keyboard?
