Help with homepage posts – where are they held

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I’m new this but setting up a page for my employer.
We want blog posts on the first page you navigate to, but once you click onto a post – how do you get back to the homepage via the menu.
If I have most up to date posts on the homepage – they disappear from the blog page?

What I need is to be able to have the posts on the homepage (first one you land on) and be able to find them on the menu, once you’ve clicked onto a post. I’d then like to archive any posts older than one year (we will likely only keep 24 months but need to get this year’s on yet!)

    Thank you in advance!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

We want blog posts on the first page you navigate to, but once you click onto a post – how do you get back to the homepage via the menu.

One way would be to edit the link URL of the menu item title “Home” so that it links to the Homepage instead of a static page titled “Home.”

Since you’ve chosen to the display posts on the front page, the static pages titled “Home” and “Blog,” respectively, may not be needed. The status of each of the two pages could be changed from published to draft if you think you might use them someday. These pages would be more useful if you had a static front page.

If I have most up to date posts on the homepage – they disappear from the blog page?

Your homepage is the blog page, so I don’t understand the question.

I’d then like to archive any posts older than one year (we will likely only keep 24 months but need to get this year’s on yet!)

Archiving of posts occurs automatically when you set a posts per page limit at My Site(s) > Settings > Writing > Content types. Note that this setting not only affects the blog page, but also all archives pages such as year, month, and date archives, category and tag archives, author archives, etc.

The Content Types section of the Writing Settings support page includes an illustration that shows the blog posts per page setting. The number can be changed by simply clicking on the up/down arrows. When you’ve reached the desired number, save the change.

For archives organized by month and year you may wish to use the Archives Widget. However, this widget can not be customized to display only posts from certain years.

Archives Shortcode does allow such customization. With archives shortcode you may, for example, choose to display archives for the last 12 months, 24 months, etc. The shortcode may be inserted into a text widget, or into any content type (page, post, etc.). If you want to keep years separate from each other, just use a different shortcode for each year and stack them.
