Help With Import Please!

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello, I am trying to import my blog posts from my old wordpress.com sub domain, to my new .org self-hosted site. I tried to do it on my own, and I keep getting this message: Sorry, there has been an error.
This does not appear to be a WXR file, missing/invalid WXR version number

Can I please get some help here, I am freaking out!

By they way, when I do import my old blog posts, will the media library in my .org page be updated with all my old media as well?

    Thank you for the help!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hello!

Some have had success with this by opening the xml file, looking for the line that reads…
    <wp:wxr_version>1.2</wp:wxr_version>

    and changing it to

    <wp:wxr_version>1.1</wp:wxr_version>

Give that a try and let me know how you go.

As for the media library, as long as you selected ‘All content’ when exporting it should be fine.

    I hope that helps!

I tried to give it a go, but there are many parts to this that I do not understand and I ended up getting confused. When I opened up the folder there were 3 other files inside which lead me to 3 different codes. I tried to fix what you told me to fix, but when I went to save it, it asked me “where” would I save the updated file instead of saving the old copy in its original place in the xml folder. And thanks for that nugget of wisdom and reassurance!

It’s a single .xml file that is downloaded.

Try a new export, note where it’s getting downloaded to, and open the file with a text editor.

okay so I did the 7-zip solution that the other poster suggested, and I think I may have made a bigger mess of things. I “extracted” the file through the 7-zip app and I uploaded it, but since it saved on my desktop as an open folder, I had to import all 3 files inside the folder one by one. Now even though it did upload, it was in increments and blog posts are missing. Is there a way for me to undo that damage and wait for a wp professional to take care of this? speaking of wp professionals, how long does one usually wait for them to stroll around? Thanks.

What is the site address/url that you’re trying to export?

I m trying to export from mondayswithsharon.wordpress.com and import those files (including media) to mondayswithsharon.com

I’ll go give it an eye.

I managed to undo the damage by trashing everything, I read the article but I was left just as dumbfounded haha I did that exact thing in the beginning and it would not let me upload, it also says that it “may” import your images/media during the transfer, but I need to know if that will be a sure thing because manually switching it over is another headache I do not need. I am sorry if I am being a pain in the butt, but this is not my area of expertise and all of this new information can be a bit overwhelming.

    It does say …

Free, self-directed exports are optimal for people who merely want to save a copy of their content or who are comfortable migrating to other hosts without assistance.

Running a self-hosted WordPress.org site, like your site at Bluehost, puts 100% of the responsibility for it’s care and feeding with you. This import is a good example of what can go wrong.

It seems that WordPress.com is ideal for yourself. Is there some particular reason why you wish to host your own version of WordPress? If it’s just for the domain, you can point your domain to your WordPress.com site.

To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different things: https://wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

    Hope that helps!

  • @mws0 WordPress.org is DIY and does require a bit more technical know-how. If you’re comfortable, you can ask the community for help at https://wordpress.org/support . You can also use these steps: https://move.wordpress.com

Also, it may be as simple as unzipping the file and uploading each one one at a time, instead of uploading a zip.

If you’re still having trouble, we do have a guided transfer option available for supported hosts:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/

You might also consider just keeping your site here, as @joerepublic suggested, so we can provide support for you.
