Help with importing – error messages
-
Hi,
I currently have a WordPress.org site (www.the-wild-life.com) and I want to move the content over to a free WordPress.com site. I set a site up today (alysthewildlife.wordpress.com) and attempted to import a .xml file of my website’s content. However I got a notification saying I do not have permission to import and now a message keeps coming up saying ‘there was an error retrieving purchases’.
Can you please advise how I move all the content from my .org site over to a new, free .com site?
Many thanks in advance!
Alys

Hi @the0wild0life, okay I think’ve found and fixed the issue. Can you try once more using these steps?

Thanks so much for this! Importing seems to be going OK – it’s been stuck at ‘Waiting on 43 resources to import’ for a while but I’m sure it takes time to move everything over…
The next step in the link you sent was: ‘Connect your domain to your WordPress.com blog’. I want to move my website to the free WordPress.com so I no longer have to pay for a domain etc. So am I right in thinking I don’t need to bother with this step?
Is there anything else I need to think about doing before my domain ownership expires in July to ensure I successfully move everything over?
Thanks again!

Update- Import successful. Although when I try to view the site, I get the error message:
alysthewildlife.wordpress.com is no longer available.

Hi @the0wild0life, it shouldn’t be suspended. It looks like there was a problem in import but that was corrected. Can you try closing and re-opening your browser?

If I were in your shoes, I would add the domain, but I would make the WordPress.com site primary. That way all visits and links to the old domain will automatically forward to the free address, along with a signal to search engines to update their links. After a year or so, you can drop the custom domain altogether — without taking too much of a hit on SEO. Or, if you don’t already have a lot of SEO and links out on social media, you can just skip the custom domain now. I hope that helps.

All looks OK – thanks! Just got to do a bit of reformatting..
Thanks for the tips on the domain, I’ll do just that!

Hi again!
I’ve managed to sort out my new free WordPress.com site and was just re-reading the link you sent which suggests using domain mapping to redirect people from the old site to the new site.
However, I can’t use domain mapping without paying for a whole year on a paid plan ($2.99/ month for the cheapest) as it’s not available on the free plan.
Is there any way I can use redirects through my WordPress.org domain to redirect until the hosting expires in July? I’ve used redirect plugins before to redirect the odd page or two – but is there a way to use a plugin to redirect ALL pages from the old website to the new free one? Even if the redirects just take the person to the new home page and not necessarily the actual page they were looking for?
Thanks in advance!

@the0wild0life while you could use hosing redirects, it would not be good for your SEO. I recommend using getting the personal plan and allowing it to overlap your old hosting.
