Help with Jquery
-
Hi all,
First my site is http://propertyofproperty.com and the theme is ‘structure’.
Please don’t reply with a “bugger off, your site is an .org”. The site is .com.
I have this ‘airport’ jquery I found at http://www.unwrongest.com/projects/airport/ that I’d really like to insert into my website, preferably in the area of the header.
I haven’t the slightest idea how to do this and after copious amounts of hours searching for tutorials on jquery and wordpress, I still don’t get it. Moreover, I’m not even sure if I can put it into my wordpress.com.
1. Is jquery possible on my site without being .org?
2. Is there anyway of modifying this jquery for me to simply add into my css and htmls directly? this may make turn a very simple activity into the ridiculous, but given I am only semi-capable of working in css and html, it would still be a lot easier.
One very final thing.
Jquery needs to be inserted into php files right?
Err…are these the php files on my computer – as per installation of wordpress, or are they in wordpress.com somewhere. mysql?
If I’ve done your head in, apologies and thanks in advance,

If Jquery needs to be in the php files (I think so but have never used it) then you are completely out of luck on WordPress.COM as there is no access to the base php files.
The php files are on WordPress.COM and make both the WordPress software and the Themes work –
However – there are many very resourcesful people on the Forum – if you describe the end results you want they might be able to suggest a work around to do what you want.
@simontaful – this is the wrong forum for you to get much help. This Forum is for sites hosted on WordPress.COM only.

Hey,
Thanks for clarifying that auxclass. After reading a little more it does seem that Javascript/Jquery is definitely impossible with wp.com.
Hopefully there is another way round it though.

There is no way around it of which I am aware. Here at wordpress.COM there are codes that are stripped out by the software to maintain security on this multiuser blogging platform and javascript is among them. See > http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/
The bottom line is that your are posting to the wrong support forum for your software. The correct one for you is here > http://wordpress.ORG/support/
Clarification is in the sticky post at the head of the forum > https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/please-read-me-first-before-posting?replies=1
Best wishes with your wordpress.ORG install. :)

I’m quite sure that using that exact code isn’t possible, and I’m not aware of any tickers of that nature that do work here, but if you can find a flash one rather than javascript, the Gigya shortcode will work.

one more thing.
if i moved to wp.org, can i still use wp as i have been as a dashboard with all the widgets and interface etc?
also, if i went wp.org i intuit my php files would be available via a host’s website? and i could edit them from there for jquery that wp.org would then recognise?
would themes still be available to me as they have been.
am lost.

It’s very, very similar, but not identical. You won’t notice any meaningful dashboard differences except the Plugins tab. And yes, you can get at your php files and edit them and put in all kinds of things.
Themes….no. WP.com makes many of their themes available to .org, but they never work EXACTLY the same (the duotone photoblog theme, for instance, will not display photos: a distinct disadvantage). Many of the themes we use here were first developed and released for .org and thus are available there, as are many thousands of other themes. Be careful: some of them have malware built in, and it’s up to you to make sure you don’t pick one of those.

Yeah, know your source when going for a theme. Watch out on plugins also. In general, anything over at .ORG’s extend section you can figure is probably safe (very high likelihood).
