Help with running a server for blog! 24 hour hosting?

Hey guys,
I’m really looking into doing a bit more with my blog and want to get it going with some custom theme-ing and attachments like Digg buttons e.t.c. However, everywhere I look I get advised to run my own server. Just a couple of quick questions:
1. If I start up my own server, does that mean that I run my blog from it, and therefore unless my computer is switched on, my blog won’t be able to be read?
2. Is this the only way to get stuff like custom Digg icons on each of my posts without me using the whole web interface server thing?Thanks guys I really appreciate it! : )

Why in GOD’S NAME would you need to run your own server? I suspect you’re misinterpreting “get hosting on a different server” for “get your own server”.
Go to http://wordpress.org and look in the support forums for their host recommendations.
now, to the specifics:
1) taking you literally, yes. Taking the above interpretation, ie you get independent hosting, it doesn’t matter as long as your web host is on (which most of them are, all the time, or they’d be quickly put out of business).
2) No, you can use many other options which a search of the forum would have shown you. I recommend http://getsociallive.com simply because it’s dead easy and, no matter WHAT platform you’re using, it ALWAYS WORKS. It also includes a Facebook Like button.

I don’t know why! Thanks for the help but now I have another problem!
I have already got web hosting with Godaddy.com and now it says that I need to buy another one like Laughing Squid! How many of these ruddy things do I need? Also that getsociallive thing doesn’t work! You need a server for it to run which is the issue I am having!

Before you can run, you should walk straight over to the WordPress.com Support docs and do some reading.

You can put social bookmarking icons on your hosted WordPress.com or self-hosted WordPress.org blog with getsociallive without any need for running your very own in-house server. Just copy the code you get from the getsociallive page into the HTML Editor of your WordPress blog (which by the way your blog here seems to be deleted?)
Since I expect you’ll have more questions after reading the above, I think I’ll stop here.
