Help with search engines and my posts

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I wasn’t for sure who to ask on this, so I’ll just post my question here. I recently transferred my wordpress.com site over to bluehost and wordpress.org. I didn’t realize that the transfer would actually change the web addresses to my blog posts.

    Here is an example:

    Old address – christianworldviewpress.com/2013/06/27/romans-818-25-a-passage-of-hope/

    New address – christianworldviewpress.com/?p=522

Both lead to the same post, but the first one is now broken (of course as it should be). Since I have transferred over to the new host, the views on my site have been almost nonexistent. Most people get to my site by using google or some other search engine. The problem is that it is the old web addresses that are showing up in search engines and not the new ones. Is there anything that can be done? Do I have to delete the old addresses, or is it something that google will do automatically over time?

    Thank you for your time.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

To redirect your website addresses, you need to the Site Redirect upgrade. You can find out more about it here:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/

    I hope that helps you.

You should also change your Permalinks to match here – ask at WordPress.ORG for help matching the link structure

If you don’t care what your permalinks look like, you could also go to settings>permalinks on the dashboard of your new site and change your permalink setting to “day and name”

@auxcalss–whoops I opened this thread way before I posted–sorry for the double post–and tiptoeing over the “no WP.org” support in the forum line.

Is OK – no harm done – sometimes I will answer a .ORG question then in the next line explain why they need to get help at .ORG – last time I think it was a lost log-in page – so I went ahead and gave them the URL with the standard copy & paste of mine to make friends over at .ORG

Thanks everyone for your responses. I clicked on the link for the site redirect upgrade and it told me to go the store on the dashboard, but the store is no longer available since I have made the switch from wordpress.com to wordpress.org. Is there anywhere else that I can go to purchase the upgrade? Thanks.

I could be wrong on this, but if your domain (http://christianworldviewpress.com) used to point to your WordPress.com site, and now points to your self-hosted site, you shouldn’t need the site redirect upgrade. If you just change your permalink structure, your problem will be solved.

Thank you. I’ll get started on changing the permalink structure.

@lizthefair – correct – But – it also depends on how long the custom domain name has been mapped to a blog here – if the mapping has been long enough that search engines have fully indexed the site with the custom domain mapping then yes search traffic for Posts, pages, tags and categories will go to the correct place (if the receiving permalinks match)

The limit to search engines is that all images and such from the Media Library show the base blog address (file-name.old-site.wordpress.com) – so image links will still be broken without the site redirect.

One year on the site redirect should be fine
