Help with Sketch theme
-
I’ve recently started setting up my portfolio website using the sketch theme (https://wordpress.com/theme/sketch/margaridaroxo.wordpress.com)
I’ve followed the instructions described in the link above, but there’s a detail that’s not really clear to me.
In order to change my homepage to the portfolio page, I’ve had to create the Portfolio Page Template they describe, which is the “Show Reel 2019”, the first image you see on my website.
But now whenever I click on it, the website links me back at the homepage. What I’d like it to do is to link me the project page I created for it, instead of it being sort of a header picture.
Is that possible? I’d basically like the big square to be treated as one of the smaller ones below it, a feature image that links me to its own project page.Thank you for your time!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi,
In order to change my homepage to the portfolio page, I’ve had to create the Portfolio Page Template they describe, which is the “Show Reel 2019”, the first image you see on my website. But now whenever I click on it, the website links me back at the homepage.
Your homepage is a static page with the Portfolio Page Template assigned. When a static page is set as the homepage, its URL is changed to the website URL. That’s why when you add it to the Featured Content slider, that item in the slider is linked to the homepage.
What I’d like it to do is to link me the project page I created for it, instead of it being sort of a header picture.
Your homepage is a static page, not a project. In fact, the homepage can not be a project. If you’ve created a project titled “Show Reel 2019,” or corresponding to the static page of that title, then it apparently isn’t published. If it were, then we’d find it on your Portfolio page, here: https://margaridaroxo.wordpress.com/portfolio/.
I do notice, however, that the project titled “Catarse,” has the slug “show-reel” in its URL (https://margaridaroxo.wordpress.com/portfolio/show-reel/), which suggests that it might have originally been titled “Show Reel.” This project has not visible content.

You may display a maximum of ten posts, pages, or portfolio projects in the Featured Content Slider, as indicated in the Featured Content section of the Sketch Theme Overview.

Thank you for your reply!
In that case, is it possible in the portfolio page to change the dimensions of only one of the project featured images, so that in terms of layout it looks like the demo sketch theme, but when clicking on the picture it actually links me to a project?
What I basically like about the sketch theme is the idea that there’s one project that’s big and landscape shaped, and below it there are several other projects smaller in its presentation.
-
It’s not necessary to change the dimensions of a project’s featured image to obtain the results that you want. Any portfolio project that is tagged with the tag assigned as the Featured Content tag will display as they do in the Featured Content Slider of the Sketch Demo, and be linked to the corresponding project. This is true of posts and page assigned to the Featured Content slider as well.
-
-
Is there any chance I can then remove the project from below? So it only appears in the featured content section and nowhere else?

Are you sure? Sorry, I’d missed your previous question, and I’ve got to retire now for the evening. If you’d like that question answered, or have more questions, you may add a “modlook” tag to the sidebar of this topic to call for staff attention.
I’ll check back here ASAP tomorrow. Goodnight. : )

Hi there!
Most themes will do just that – if a post is displayed as Featured, it won’t appear in the list of posts below.
Right now, this is what I see on your homepage: https://d.pr/i/FLBA33. It looks like that project is not displaying in the list of projects below. Is that what you wanted, or do you still need help? -
staff-mckluskey,
Hi. Although the issue has been marked resolved, the homepage of the site https://margaridaroxo.wordpress.com/ has been showing a “nothing found” error every time that I’ve checked it over the past 17+ hours.
In the topic Homepage, started in February 2021, a similar “Nothing Found” error is reported by the OP, who was evidently using the Apostrophe 2 theme. It’s a fairly common issue, but in this case, @fstat indicates that he thinks that result might be caused by featured tag bug.
I’ve also noticed another issue common to both Sketch and Apostrophe 2 regarding the “Also display tagged posts outside the Featured Content area” feature at Customize > Featured Content, but I think I might report that issue in a separate topic, either in the support forums or elsewhere.

Hi @musicdoc1,
Hi. Although the issue has been marked resolved, the homepage of the site https://margaridaroxo.wordpress.com/ has been showing a “nothing found” error every time that I’ve checked it over the past 17+ hours.
That’s because the page they have selected as the front page is private.

That’s a different issue than this one. In the case of the Apostrophe 2 theme, this is caused by a bug in the theme’s codebase. Whereas in most other cases like this one, it is caused by an unpublished (draft) or private page.
I’ve also noticed another issue common to both Sketch and Apostrophe 2 regarding the “Also display tagged posts outside the Featured Content area” feature at Customize > Featured Content, but I think I might report that issue in a separate topic, either in the support forums or elsewhere.
Please do :)

I’m aware of the most common causes of the “not found” result on the homepage, but two things made me think it might be something else this time:
1. I’d visited that homepage a number of times before @margaridaroxo mentioned that they were marking the issue resolved.
2. The other issue that I mentioned eventually brought me to the github issue Apostrophe 2: Featured Content Displays Outside Featured Area Despite Setting #2048, where at the bottom I found your link to the “Homepage” topic. Since the primary issue described in the github issue affects not only Apostrophe 2, but also Sketch (as I’ll clarify elsewhere), I thought the issue that you caught might affect both themes as well.
-
Here’s the key to issue #2048: On both Apostrophe 2 and Sketch, checking that box at Customize > Featured Content doesn’t effect what displays in the posts page UNLESS the homepage is set as the posts page. Also doesn’t affect archive pages.
-
I should have said that “unchecking” the box makes no difference, unless the posts page is the homepage.

I updated the comment above with your last comment.
I found the same as you regarding Sketch. In fact, it got pretty complex as I researched this! You can do some pretty interesting things in Sketch if you set your latest posts as your home page, set and apply a featured tag, and check whether or not to display tagged posts outside the Featured Content area.
If I’m reading you correctly, it sounds like you see a connection between “Nothing Found” and the option to “Also display tagged posts outside the Featured Content area” within each theme’s Customize > Featured Content settings. But, I’m struggling to make that connection. Am I reading you correctly? If I am, could you provide a little more info on the connection you see?
If I’m incorrect, could you help get me on track when you get some time? Thank you!

Hi. No, that was just speculation, based on the two factors I’ve listed here. I’m satisfied with @fstat’s response to my speculation on that.
My tests have only showed that on both Apostrophe 2 and Sketch unchecking the box labeled “Also display tagged posts outside the Featured Content area” feature at Customize > Featured Content has no effect upon what displays on a site’s latest posts page (blog page), UNLESS the homepage is the posts page. I’d previously reported this in a response in the topic “Featured Content Doubled,” in January 2020, in post #3418265. However, three months later when the issue came up again in the topic Posts displayed both as featured content and regualr ones, I’d somehow forgotten my previous discovery. The latter topic led to the starting of GitHub issue #2048 by staff-blorbo.
I’ve written up a draft for a new topic to bring these things together coherently. I hadn’t wanted to hijack this topic, but…so much for those good intentions. : )
-
I’ve explained some of the reasons why it is unsatisfactory that unchecking that box affects only the posts page (not archives), AND only when the homepage is the posts page, elsewhere in the topic Featured Content Doubled, including here and here.
Another reason not explicitly stated there, and only applicable to the Sketch theme, is that most users of Sketch are not going to have posts displayed on the homepage. Their front page will most likely be a static page with the Portfolio Page Template assigned.
