Help with some key questions so I can stay with wordpress for my new blog

This has been bothering me for quite some time. You will describe a new theme as having “theme options,” yet I am unable to see what these options are until I activate the theme. Is there no way of getting a more detailed “run through” on those blogs that offer a range of theme options?. Case in point: your new theme: Brand New Day comes in “4 flavo(u)rs”, but lists more than 4 colo(u)rs, so just what are the flavo(u)rs? Different header and footer images? If these images change with the colo(u)rs, then give me more than one example of what the “flavo(u)r” of Brand New Day is. I have opted often NOT to change my theme, even when I have seen others than, when I preview on my blog (including premium ones I’d be willing to pay for), I can’t see the range of options “hinted” at such as theme-options.
Also, as someone who hasn’t designed websites, etc., some of the options that I now I have to chose from when I select a post are lenghthy, but I have NO idea what they mean. Is there a glossary I’m, in my myopic and obvisolusly short-sighted view missing?
I won’t get started on my other issues publishing from either microsoft blog or live writer to wordpress draft. The wordpress editing pane is so small, what appears in the pane, does not translate into what appears as the blog entry, especially spacing.
And, I once had a zemanta with tabs, now the tabs are gone. And, it seems like I only have one option now for placement of the zemata generated images which are getting further and further away from any tags or keywords in my blog. Is this a service I have to pay for now? I have tried redowloading zemata, restarting wordpress and restarting my computer, but the tabs illustrated on the zemata site will not appear.
By the way, this rant is from someone who LIKES wordpress as a bloghosting platform! I need to set up a new blog (several I had intended to, I won’t be, so can I give the names back into the field of available names?) I have so many names without corresponding blogs because when I put in a name to see if it was available, I was told it was already taken. Only, later, I discover, it was given to me anyway, so I didn’t need to choose another blog name!
I want to stay with you folks, and these are some of the things that have me wondering if I should look elsewhere. Or, do these annoyances go away if I “upgrade?”
Looking forward to your responses. As I said, I’m willing to pay for a premium blog if I knew more about the theme-option driven bells and whistles.

Regarding the options that you can choose from when selecting a post, are you referring to your post formats? Would you be able to send me a few samples of the phrases you’re unsure of? I’d be happy to provide you with some more information :)
