Help With SPAM

    Ok, so some of you might remember my former question… which I THOUGHT was solved… but it’s not. Mmmk, here it is;
    I have these spammers, in all different languages and IP Addresses, that post like 50 links on them. They have spammed like 1800 times! How do I stop them now, and in the future? (And, if you don’t believe me that they spammed, just ask and I will kindly put up my widget…)

    Are they going into “awaiting moderation” or into the Akismet spam list”? If they go into the akismet spam list then the system is working, but it has not yet learned that these new spammers are spam. Once you delete them, then Akismet will learn, but it may take a day or two for them to make it all the way through the system.

    Under option > discussion “comment moderation, make certain the number there for maximum links is set to a low number like 2 and it should then put them into the Akismet queue for you.

    Ok, thanks, and yes, they would go to Akismet spam first. But, the problem is, they’ve been spamming me for about 2-3 weeks.
    I think that since they all have different names, e-mail, IP Address, language, etc. that Akismet does not know they are all related.

    Having similiar troubles luvineopets. Most of it is adult content and there are always a bunch of them in Akismet every day. Always different IP’s, always diferent emails and names but usually just a pile of links to adult oriented material. It started about a month or so ago as I recall and gets worse each week.

    If they’re going into Akismet, how, exactly, do they cause a problem? Akismet is there to catch spam, and it’s doing the job, so I’m not seeing a problem. It’s like saying “There’s dirt in my air filter!”

    BTW the better-known and more popular you are, the more spam you get. You can avoid it by not linking to other sites, not encouraging other sites to link to you, not listing yourself in directories, and so on. But is it worth it?

    Like raincoaster I do not see what your problem is. You can simply clear your Akismet spam filter every day like the rest of us do. And how to blacklist has been already explained to you by sunburntkaeml here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=17264&page&replies=6#post-129187
    These are our only tools. We cannot help you any further with this.

    Akismet is doing its job. If any happen to get through, just identify them as spam and Akismet will learn and block them. One suggestion is to make sure that you have your blog set up so that first time comments are held in moderation until you approve them. That keeps them from showing up on your posts.

    Options > discussion and make sure that “Comment author must have a previously approved comment” is checked. Once you approve someone, then from that point forward their comments will not require moderation.

    No, no, I’m having the same problem. Askimet IS catching a lot of spam but there’s a lot of it also coming through as comments. I don’t really know what to do. In just two minutes (I counted) I had more than 60 spam comments in Askimet. Now that I don’t mind because it means Askimet is working.
    But when it comes through as comments on the blog it drives me nuts. And I have marked it spam but it still gets through.
    Any suggestions on what can be done?

    @tbhanks
    You might have to identify spams that get through as such several times before akismet learns, and in addition I have noticed that although names stay the same on seemingly identical spams, that the ip addresses will change slightly. It takes a little bit of time for the new spams you have identified to work their way through the system.

    To prevent them from showing up on your blog, do as I suggest on the post right above yours and make sure to set your blog so that first-time commenters have to be approved.

    I’m speculating, but it may be that there were some changes just recently to akismet or the algorithms it uses and that may be part of the reason for the recent changes being seen by bloggers.

    I’ve noticed that if you clear your Akismet file, fewer spams show up. But I’ve definitely been noticing a lot that have been getting through. I just cleared my file to help prevent it. 9253 spams nuked.
