Help with Sunderland Theme, replicating home page settings

  • Unknown's avatar

After a very long search and multiple tries, I am thrilled with the Sunderland theme. I wanted to create a page for the site and exactly mimic the visual look of the home page (block: cover- full image background, etc.) so I saved that whole block as a pattern then used it on the new page and edited texted fields, etc. as I needed.
I didn’t touch any other settings, but for some reason, the cover photo on this new page is not the full background. I even tried using the original, home page photo and no luck, which leads me to believe there’s some setting off rather than the photo itself.

The site isn’t live yet, so I’m not sure if anyone here can see it or not, but any help would be appreciated.

    Hello @mrbrianorsi,

I love hearing how happy you are with the Sunderland theme, it really does have a bold and striking look, especially with that full-width cover image on your homepage!

I checked your site, and I believe you’re referring to the “Support the Scene” page. I can see you’ve done a great job replicating the layout using a saved pattern, nice move! On this page, the cover image looks similar to the homepage, but I noticed it isn’t stretching full width, which you’ve picked up on.

That’s actually happening because of some default padding applied in the page template. Here’s how you can adjust that:

    1. Open your “Support the Scene” page in the editor.
    2. In the right sidebar, click on Page settings.
    3. Click on Pages next to Template, and then click on Edit Template – here’s a quick visual for that step: https://snipboard.io/tThH24.jpg
    4. In the List View, click to expand the Post Content block, then select the Group block inside it.
    5. In the right sidebar under Block Styles → Dimensions, you’ll see padding applied (typically 5vw on the left and right).
    6. Remove that padding and save your changes. It should look like this: https://snipboard.io/uQgBlW.jpg

Once that’s done, your cover image will extend full width, just like on your homepage!

You can also refer to this guide on adjusting block dimensions: https://wordpress.com/support/block-dimensions-settings/#access-the-dimensions-settings

Let me know how it goes, and if you’re working on more pages, I’d love to help make sure everything aligns just right!

thank you so much for the clear reply with screenshots. very helpful to me. that did the trick on the one page, but now i’m having the same problem on another i’m trying to build. i used the same pattern (with your adjustments) and am running into the same problem.

I’m very interested in better learning WP site building, so I would love to learn how to fix this within my site and template for good!

@mrbrianorsi You’re very welcome, I’m glad that did the trick on the first page! Thanks for sharing the new link. I had a look at your Upcoming page, and I still see the 5vw padding on the left and right sides. This likely means the padding is being pulled in again from the template that page is using.

Could you check if this page is using a different template from the one where the fix worked? Or is it using the default Pages template? If it’s different, you may need to repeat the same adjustment there.

    Here’s what I recommend:

    1. Open the Upcoming page in the editor.
    2. In the right sidebar, under Page settings, check which Template is being used.
    3. Click Edit next to the template name.
    4. In the Post Content block and the Group block inside it, look under Dimensions to see if any padding is applied (especially on left/right). Also, make sure the “Inner blocks use content width” toggle is turned off.
    5. If no padding is applied in the template, check the Group or Cover block directly on the page. They might also have padding added or “Inner blocks use content width” turned on, which can restrict how wide things appear.

You can find more on this option here: https://wordpress.com/support/change-the-width-of-a-block/#inner-blocks-use-content-width
