Help with the theme titled Publish

Hello. I am trying to create a custom image size for the theme “Publish”. The themes default image size is 525 px. I want the images to be 650px. I have tried to add custom css in the custom design section, however, nothing happens and the css will not override the themes default settings. Is this not possible with this theme?
Also want to remove the footer text. Can I locate the themes css files?
I have to admit I am missing the older version of WordPress.com.Thanks for your help!

There are two things you’ll want to do. One is to add custom CSS to update the width of the content area. The other thing you’ll want to do is update the content width seting in the Appearance → Themes → Customize → CSS panel to match whatever main column width you choose.
