Help with update notification and reply screening

I’d like to add a widget/something that can notify people when my blog has been updated. I’m sure there is a way to do this but a search of widget subjects wasn’t much help. Can someone please point me in the right direction for doing this?? Thank you much a head of time.

Also, I am considering setting up the comments section so it shows a letter pattern for screening people (don’t know exactly what this is called) that want to leave a reply. Since I’m not sure what it is called I’m also not sure where to look for instructions. Last question, would this approach to replies even be a good idea or should I leave it where I get an email of replies needing to be approved?? Just curious whether this might cause spam or who knows what else.

I thank you a head of time for your help here.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can offer email updates through feedburner: http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/10/11/how-can-i-offer-email-updates/ .

It’s called a captcha, and we cannot use them here at wordpress.COM.

I typically keep my blog set up so that first-time commenters go to moderation. After I once approve them the first time then they do not need approval after that.

I’m trying to set up a contact form and it says….

It is very easy to have a contact form on your blog. All you need to do is type the following into any post or page on your blog:
    [contact-form]
After publishing, a simple contact form asking for the sender’s name, email address, website and message will be displayed.
    ——————————

Do I do this while signed in – not working – no form comes up – or do I do this as a visitor (signed out)??? Or is there something else I’m totally missing?? OMG, I feel so stupid right now, having to ask this question.

I have the feeling the answer to this issue is going to be very simple – and I’m going to cry out of embarrassment.

As to the contact form, I just tried it in both my test blog, and in my real blog. No dice.
The contact form I made some time ago works, but adding one now is broken.
