Help with uploading images

  I am learning how to upload images to my site. I have successfully uploaded the image but i notice there are white lines (spaces) on either side of the picture i uploaded. I thought it had something to do with the size of the picture but the spaces seem to come and go, As in one minute the picture is flush the next i can see spaces. Can anyone please help me?
