Help – writing code for text widget?

  I do not know CSS or HTML, so all of my blogging is done with trial and error. In the past I have written text as a new post, and then cut and pasted the code to get the info. I am trying to add a link and a few lines of colored text to my sidebar using a text widget, but when I use the above method, I only see the code, with the blog default text color. What am I doing wrong?
