Help….I cannot get rid of default featured image.

  • Unknown's avatar

I inserted a new page (“Michael Palmer”, under “People” menu). The insertion went okay, but I found that a default image was automatically inserted at the top of the page, instead of a photo of Michael Palmer. I tried turning off insertion of the default image and that screwed up images on multiple pages on the site. Then I turned it back on, and then the default image was wrong on both “Michael Palmer” and “LP Blog”. I fixed the image on “LP Blog”, but cannot fix “Michael Palmer”. I guess it is obvious by now that I am a hopeless hacker and will soon destroy my site entirely without supervision. Can you help?

    Thanks!

    Hi there,

Don’t worry, I’ll help keep you from destroying your site! :) Here’s what’s happening:

Under Appearance > Header in your dashboard (or Appearance > Customize > Header) you can set the default header image for your site. Any new page you create will, by default, show that header image at the top of the page. I checked your “Michael Palmer” page, and that’s the image I’m seeing there.

Now, you can replace that image with a different header image, by adding a Featured Image to the page. The only caveat is that the featured image needs to be wide enough to fill that header image space. In your theme, that’s at least 960 pixels wide. If the featured image is smaller than 960 pixels wide, the page will end up with the default header image instead.

(You can find those details about your theme, and more, on the Chateau theme page.)

I see that you have a featured image on the “Michael Palmer” page, but unfortunately the image is broken and it isn’t wide enough to fill that header image space. You’ll need to use a wider image for it to appear in the header on that page.

Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

Thanks so much. That was an odd and nonintuitive fix, but it worked great! Alas, I have another problem that struck while I was fiddling with the image on the Michael Palmer page. This problem is with the image that appears on each LP Blog page that I use to post my blog within the website. Even though I have ensured that the featured image for those pages is 960 pixels wide, WordPress still inserts a default image for each and every blog visited. Weird! (Maybe this is because these are blog ages and not a static page??? I dunno.) The inserted image is the correct photo but it has huge, ugly white margins above and below that I need to get rid of. I am sure there is an easy fix here too, but I have not blundered upon it!

Individual blog posts also show a featured image in the header, for example on this post: http://loonproject.org/2014/04/28/the-loons-are-back/

However, the main blog page itself at http://loonproject.org/recent-events/ will always show the default header image.

If you’d like to change the default header image (so it doesn’t have those white margins) you can change it under Appearance > Header in your dashboard. It looks like you have another image uploaded there without the margins, but you can also upload a new image if you need.

Let me know if you have any other questions about that. :)
