Helping Getting Coraline Theme To Function Like a Website
-
Hi,
I’m brand new to WordPress with very limited technical experience. I would like guidance on a few things I can do to help my blog function and look more like a Web site and less like a blog. Specifically, I would like to know how to:
1.) Remove the “Leave a Comment” portion from my posts
2.) Remove the black WordPress bar that appears at the top of the screen when you land on the blog
Any other suggestions you may have that would be helpful, I would appreciate as well. Again, I’m just learning the ropes.
Thanks!

1.) Remove the “Leave a Comment” portion from my posts
This page > Settings > Discussion
http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/
Discussion settings is where you set up defaults for comments.
We can also override the default settings and enable or disable future comments on any post or page. http://en.support.wordpress.com/enable-disable-comments/
Depending on the theme we use when we close comments a phrase like “comments closed” or a similar phrase may appear and if so, it can only be removed by CSS editing after purchasing a custom design upgrade. http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/2.) Remove the black WordPress bar that appears at the top of the screen when you land on the blog
If you are referring to the Admin bar at the top of all WordPress.com blogs then that cannot be removed. -
Pages are static and are for content that rarely changes. They sit outside of the blog structure and you cannot post to multiple pages in any blog. There is only one main page for posts in a blog and all posts will display on the main blog page. There is no way to exclude posts from the main posts (blog) page.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/The front page of the blog by default will display your posts (not pages) in reverse chronological order, with the most recently published post on top. If you do not want all the posts to show on the front page, then you can create a static front page “Welcome” for your site and a “Blog” page for posts.
Choice 1 static front page
Choice 2 running page for all posts on front page
Which do you choose? It’s one or the other.
If you choose a static front page then you have to create two pages as I said above. After you do that you go to > Settings > Reading and make the designation change and click “save changes”.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/Though there is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts and we cannot post to more than that one page, we can create the appearance that we have posted to more than one page. We organize posts by assigning categories to them. You can create a custom menu and add the categories pages that are automatically generated by the software into the custom menu.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#adding-category-pages-to-your-menu
Creating Sub-Menus > http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#changing-the-order-of-menu-items-and-creating-sub-menusA custom menu allows you to display Categories with drop-downs to sub-categories in tabs along the horizontal navigation where normally only Pages tabs are displayed. If you wish you can also include Pages with drop-downs to sub-pages and/or Tags pages and/or Custom Links in your custom menu as well. You are in charge of what appears in a custom menu. You choose the order in which to display any and/or all the foregoing in your custom menu. You choose which to display and which to hide.
Here’s a link to a custom menu walkthrough > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2011/08/11/wordpress-com-custom-menu-walk-through/
There are many common errors, misunderstanding and misconceptions when creating custom menus and you can read about them here > http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/12/19/custom-menus/

Thanks for the info, but I’ve seen blogs on here where the person was able to successfully remove the “Admin” bar from their blog so that one couldn’t tell it was a WordPress blog. What gives?
-
Those are WordPress.org installs. They are not WordPress.com blogs. Here every member of the WordPress.com community who is logged in has access to their Admin bar. Those who are not wordpress.com members or who are but who aren’t logged in to wordpress.com cannot see it.
-
I’ll also mention two other things that may come up:
When you are logged into your wordpress.com blog you will see Admin [edit] links and those are only fro your convenience. They cannot be seen by visitors to your blog.May I remove credit links such as ‘Blog at !WordPress.com’, theme, font, or toolbar links?
All WordPress.com bloggers are required to maintain the credit links, even our VIP bloggers. Please do not hide the footer credits or the toolbar with CSS after purchasing a Custom Design upgrade. http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/#frequently-asked-questions -
OK, in the event I want to change this WordPress.com blog over to a WordPress.org install (whatever that means?) using, say, GoDaddy as the host. What must I do?
-
The two sites are spearate and if you gave not content in your wordpress.com blog there’s nothing to export or import into a wordpress.org install. If there is content to be moved in the WordPress.com blog then see:
export http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/
export/import links http://en.support.wordpress.com/blogroll/import-export-links/

Thanks! I still wasn’t able to turn off the Comments despite going into Discussion and unchecking the box.

Every WordPress blog by default has comments open on all pages and posts. If they aren’t open then that means you have changed the settings.
1.Discussion settings is where you set up defaults for comments.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/2. We can also override the default settings and enable or disable future comments on any individual post or page. http://en.support.wordpress.com/enable-disable-comments/
