HELP…trouble logging in to password-protected page

  I am creating an online membership directory for a church. For that, I have set up a test environment to work out any kinks. I make the page password protected and assign a password. On the first go, however, I enter the password, click enter and it takes me to another page that asks me to enter the password. To further complicate things, on the second go, there is no window to enter the password. Sometimes, it goes straight to the directory without any request for password. All I want to do is make sure the page is secure and that after entering the password, you can see the page. It is not working. Any help would be most welcome!!!
